Ham help please!

I bought an unsmoked gammon joint to make cola ham - it doesn't say anything about being cured. Do I need to boil in water first? I'm getting very confused with the cooking instructions. I'm making it for Easter lunch today so any advice would be gratefully received!

Thanks

Place the ham in a large pot and cover either with cola or water flavoured with things like peppercorns, cinnamon stick, bayleaves etc. Bring to the boil, skim off any froth, put on a lid and simmer gently for about 30 mins per 1lb (or whatever the packet instructions recommend). Allow to cool a little in the liquid and then remove. At this point you should carefully strip off any rind, leaving behind a thin layer of fat. It can be served straight away or glazed with some brown sugar/mustard and briefly roasted before serving.

I never do, most unsmoked gammon joints aren't that salty. I just cover with coke and add a halved onion then bring to the boil and simmer until cooked.

You can soak it in water first to remove some of the salt but it will be OK if you don't. Just make sure you discard any cooking liquid afterwards.... that really will be inedibly salty
