please can you tell me if I have to soak these overnight? that's what it says on the packet but I don't believe it!

You can just cook them from dry - but I soak them by pouring boiling water on them and leaving for 10 mins, and doing this 3 times, by which time they are pretty much soaked......

split peas? Make Pease pudding.
Keep topping up with boiling water over a very low heat add a little mustrad and lots and lots of pepper. Keep mushing the peas till it's a graing consistency and eat with ham sandwiches. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Takes forever but totally worth it.

nigel slaters split pea soup - boil em up with a halved onion; mash raw garlic, chilli, (fresh) mint, parsley, coriander, black pepper and sea salt into some butter. serve a dollop of soup with a dollop of butter melted into the middle.

Or.....

fry up garlic,onions and chilli on a low heat until brown. Also maybe a teaspoon of turmeric.
Add a good dollop of Patak's curry paste.
Add the split peas,giving a good stir.
Add a can of tomatoes and a can of coconut milk.
Simmer for 30 mins (keep an eye,may need water added from time to time).

May also need a tablespoon of sugar (rounds off the taste) and a shake or two of soy.

Serve with rice or on its own.

Ypu're all so exotic.

In my tropical childhood,reading about such dishes was the ultimate in strange and foreign to me....
