Blackberries...

I have a glut of blackberries in my freezer. I want to add some to my eton mess (on other thread) but I also have a type of blackberry sponge pudding in mind.. Would I need to cook and sweeten the blackberries first before putting the sponge mix on top? Or just chuck them in the pudding bowl?

Can't imagine that you'd need to cook them if they are going in a cake, as blackberries cook very quickly. Might want to sprinkle with caster sugar though. This is just a guess....
