Living in that well known coastal region that is Hertfordshire I have not been able to lay my hands on any.

Does anyone know where I can buy some...mail order?

I have never seen it being sold - surely it would be out of season anyway? I use to pick my own when I lived near the coast - but not in January!

Tut tut. It's illegal to pick samphire...

biglips · 06/02/2006 22:57

what is a samphire???? pls anyone????

helsi · 06/02/2006 22:58

not sure - the last i saw of it was at a farmers market in St Annes near Blackpool in August last year. A woman and her kids go to pickit then sell the bunches. I will keep looking for you though.

I have eaten it in Cornwall - it's green and looks abit like seaweed but smaller

salty flavour too - delicious cooked with butter and pepper

maybe there's a particular variety you can dry and smoke

google gives this doesn't it look a nice place. anyway, i've seen it fresh in fishmongers but not for a few years, think is a bit of a delicacy now.

Thirtysix · 07/02/2006 09:42

Thanks guys-didn't even think about whether it was in season or not
Suddenly had a mad craving for it at the weekend for some reason....
Looks like I will have to go on holiday to Norfolk or Wales-don't fancy it pickled-Helsi is right-delicious with a bit of butter.

Fishmongers sell it although I don't know about seasonality. Am fairly sure I saw it for sale in Waitrose at WGC too. As you are in Herts have you considered a trip to Borough Market? There are some excellent fish stalls there.
Not that keen on the taste personally - a bit like salty young asparagus with an odd aftertaste.

You can only get it in July and August.
