How to use a steamer

I've acquired a cheapy steamer through Freecycle, but it doesn't come with any instructions and I haven't used one before. It looks sort of like this. Can anyone advise in easy-to-follow short words how to work it and how best to cook things like veg/potatoes/chicken breasts in it?
