Is it just me or are the methods of slaughtering not very humane? Not allowed to be stunned/anaethasised etc, killed with one swipe of a long sharp blade?

Would like to know more about this procedure if anyone can enlighten me. Am curious.

Thanks.

I used to think that, but last year there was a documentary about an abbatoir, and the halal and kosher slaughterers came across as being far more skilled and caring about the animal than the other slaughtering processes.
In the general slaughterhouse, the animals were very badly treated, also often only partially killed, and the guys (real spine-chillers) didn't ca\re at all.

The kosher guy explained that the concept was to treat the animal / meat with absolute respect and dignity, and they were quick, skilled and less casualy brutal - the animals weren't herded about in terror, etc.
