Easter breakfast boiled eggs

The DC want to make a special breakfast for DH (who doesn't eat chocolate)
I thought a boiled 'dippy' egg with soldiers might be nice.
If I use food colouring in the water would it be enough to colour the shells without turning the egg itself coloured? I'd buy white shell eggs rather than beigey ones.

How long would I boil a dippy egg for? (I boil mine till they are bullet hard).

You can cooked them in dyed water or you can cook them for about 15 minutes and once cooled, dye them.

We wrapped rubber bands round our first and they looked great - all striped! You can also draw on them in wax crayon before dyeing - write Daddy or initialsbon them might be nice.

There are loads of instructions on the web. Google Purple trail Easter egg dyeing for some good tips!

Prick tiny hole in top of egg. Put egg in small saucepan with just enough cold water to cover it. Bring to boil and once properly bubbly boiling time 3 mins = perfect dippy egg :)

We do this.

Make bread soldiers, make tea and set table.

Get coloured pens, pencils, pastels, paints, anything you like really.

Boil eggs the usual time, about 3-4 minutes.

Take ourt and every one quickly decorates their egg/s. Faces, spots, stripes, blocks of colour....anything. Because they are hot use clothes to hold them and the ink/paint dries immediately.

Place in a bowl made to look like a nest and every one dig in.

The tea will of course be brewed by now.

delia method - boil on hob, when a good boil gently pop eggs in and use a timmer, time 3 mins max then move off heat and pop lid on - leave for 2 mins. always perfect.

Using medium eggs, pop them into a small pan of cold water, bring them up to the boil and boil for 3 mins 15 secs if fresh, 3 mins if a bit older. When they're done, run under cold water to stop them cooking. I always do this and only ever have dippy eggs!

Can't help with decorating them though...
