Coffee beans...

Use these mainly at the weekend, so a pack lasts a while. What's the best way to keep them fresh? Have had the freezer suggested, but someone else said this could damage them. Fridge, with a clip on, or just a tin? TIA.

Unground beans - buy a couple of weeks worth, and store in an airtight jar in a dark place - dark jar if you can.

If you don't get through that much in 2weeks, store the remainder in as little air as you can (zip-loc bags with air squashed out) in the freezer, not the fridge, never bother with the fridge. Cover it in something dark aswell if it can see the light.

Light is bad, moisture's bad, air is bad. Freezing is okay. so avoid those.

Grind immediately before use.

Fred we have to buy our beans in bulk (Dh uses every day I use once a week or so) and keep in the fridge but remove air and stick down those metallic bags after each use, we found even with ground that the fridge is fine why d'you think not?

The fridge is a terrible envoironment for ground coffee, beans can take a lot more, you can freeze them, like fred said, squeeze air out. The fridge doesnt achieve anything, the 'baddies' are air, light and moisture. The fridge has moisture and also smells which can impregnate your ground coffee. A dark cupboard would be better for your coffee.

If you are buying in bulk, i would do exactky as fred says and freeze them in ziplock or similar then grind immediately and use.
:)

Okay thanks but as I said we remove air from airtight bags. Our dark cupboard is too warm, we do it purely by trial and error and all in all the fridge works for us Smile
