reddish insects in my flour

I have some (well, a lot) of little reddish-brownish insects living in the flour and bread mixes in my cupboard. What might they be? And will I kill us all if we eat them? or do I have to get rid of all the flour and start again. There's even some naice Waitrose flour in there!

Probs weevils. Don't think they'll kill you, but I wouldn't fancy eating them ....

Twinklebum · 26/02/2012 13:54

SardineQueen · 26/02/2012 13:54

Flour mites probably

here

I wouldn't eat them and I am quite unphased by out of date food etc.

pastimperfect · 26/02/2012 13:55

I don't fancy eating them, either. DP wouldn't bat an eye and is more likely to moan about me wasting food!

I agree, flour mites probably. Bin everything contaminated, bleach the cupboards, particularly the corners, then restock with every dry thing in a plastic container or sealed plastic bag, even if unopened. When I looked I even had them in the curry powder. They dont HURT you but.....ewwww.

My mum always chucked the flour once weevils moved in Wink

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 26/02/2012 22:13

I've just read a book about the Napoleonic navy and weevils in flour were mentioned a lot. The sailors ate them!

BettySuarez · 26/02/2012 22:20

It's why sieves were invented Wink

My friend claims she once found them in a 1cm layer on top of her flour Confused

She might have been exaggerating tho.
