Baked Potatoes - Oven/Microwave

I'm doing stuffed baked potatoes for dinner tonight, so need them to have a 'crispy' edge - ie Oven Baked rather than how I usually do them in the Microwave - however I've left it a bit late to cook them completely in the oven, is it possible to cook start them off in the Microwave and then harden the skins up in the oven? If so how long should I microwave them for, and how long will they need in the oven??

I always start nmine off in the microwave until they are soft in the middle. Then stick them in the oven for, oooh, 20 mins until crisp.

I have a Panasonic combination Microwave that does it automatically, with a hot element and medium microwaving, tell it what the tatties weigh and it works out how long to cook, and they come out crispy. 2 big taters take about 18 mins.

I know that doesn't help you for now, but worth investing in when your microwave is ready for replacing.

Sio much nicer when done in the oven all the way through IMO. I find the skins don't crisp as much when started in the microwave.

Out of interest - How long do they take in the oven from scratch?

Hulababy · 26/01/2006 21:15

I normally do mine for about 1h30m for medium jackets, at about 180C or if more rushed about 1 hour on a high heat.

Hula - DH doesn't like his skins too crispy.

Ah, we have reasonably crispy skins here. DD loves the potato skins!

Prefer oven cooked but rarely think that far ahead !

I prick the skins and cook them in the microwave for 10-12 mins until they're are soft, then cover the skin with some oil (olive/vegetable) and spinkle a bit of the salt on the skins then put them in the shelf for about 15mins on about 180-200 and the skins go golden and crispy. They're the best tati's i've ever had

Microwaved potatoes are OK, but I think proper oven baked potatoes have a completely different taste and texture. Mix and match doesn't cut it for me (although of course I have done it!)
