Found something odd in my chicken - is it supposed to be there?

I've just bought a whole chicken from a supermarket. Sticking out of one end was what looked like a worm. I pulled it and it came out - it still looks a lot like a worm. It's a long tube maybe 4 inches long, about half a cm wide and hollow with ridges on like a worm looks like. Both ends look as if they've been cut.

Is it some bit of a chicken I've never heard of before, or should I take it back and complain to the shop?

No, I have certainly never found anything like this in a chicken, and I don't think I'd like to.

It's probably something concerned with the chicken's innards rather than a worm, realistically.

That said, I am a wuss and would probably write off the £6 and bin the chicken, however profligate that may sound.

ugggh!

I found a caterpillar in my minced beef once. i emailed the shop and told them. they refunded the cost of the meat.

It doesn't sound like the worms supposed to be in your chicken!

I found a caterpillar once in a ready-made cauliflower cheese from Tesco. I took it back and they rather begrudgingly gave me a £5 voucher. It was lots more than the cost of the item, but I didn't think it really compensated.

its a trachea - its windpipe. Nothing to fret about.

what hatti said. It's yuk but normal and keep your chicken (not like the smelly free range yadadada bird from ocado that I had last week what went in the bin as it was rank).

Ah, the trachea makes sense.

DS (2 yrs) will be interested to see it as we've been talking about windpipes a lot (as in 'if you poke Mummy in the windpipe it makes it difficult for me to breathe' Hmm)

Thanks everyone.
