What do you all put on your porridge?

I am a porridge virgin Grin. But I bought a big bag of oats today when I saw that they were one tenth of the cost of the breakfast cereals that I have been buying.

So 8 month old and I are going to have porridge every morning, and I need ideas to make it tasty and interesting. Obviously 8 month old can't have honey. Can I put golden syrup on hers?

What are you and your kids favourites?

I'd be more inclined to steer away from golden syrup and opt for some purée fruit as sweetnee at 8 months.

As for myself. Really indulgent porridge would have maple syrup. But I'm following slimming world so tend to have half a tub of fat free yog and some chopped banana. Really tasty.

Make your porridge with half milk and water and ideally steep it ready for cooking from the night before. It's really creamy if steeped and has more oaty goodness.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 16/02/2012 13:00

Why can she not have honey but she can have golden syrup?

I have nothing on mine apart from salt

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/02/2012 13:02

Banana or tinned fruit. Dd1 loves it.

Quenelle · 16/02/2012 13:03

Mashed up banana.

Grated apple and cinnamon.

GetOrf there's a risk of botulism with honey in children under one.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/02/2012 13:03

Can't have honey under a year because it's bee vomit and vile contains things which might make babies poorly

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/02/2012 13:04

...or what Quenelle said...

GetOrfMoiiLand · 16/02/2012 13:12

lol at gwen.

I had no idea re botulism.

Mind you I am the mother of a teenager, I forgot what I fed her as a baby, it could have been Opal Fruits sandwiches for all I know.

bagelmonkey · 16/02/2012 13:13

Sultanas & cinnamon.

Vajazzler · 16/02/2012 13:15

I love cinnamon on mine. Also mashed banana,or for a very special treat a teaspoon of nutella stirred through. Yum!

javo · 16/02/2012 13:24

Any kind of cooked fruit e.g. apple puree or pear puree or a fruit compote- my dc used to like a good dollop of plain yoghurt on it too.

Taffeta · 16/02/2012 14:40

Same as bagelmonkey - sultanas and cinnamon

DC have had this since tiny. They tested the Quaker Oatso Simple chocolate porridge the other day and declared it vile. ( they are 8 and 5 now )

They are now, sadly, addicted to sultanas and cinnamon and want it on everything! eg toast etc. Hot x buns are unsurpisingly very popular, plus those bagels.....

BettyBathroom · 16/02/2012 14:50

Made with milk - I add berries or dried fruit, cinnamon & maple syrup - a splash of cream if I have it.

Smellslikecatspee · 16/02/2012 14:58

I'm not a fan OH is and is a big kid.........

We do semi skimmed milk and soak overnight in a microwavable tub and just zap it in the morning

any and all fruit what ever is in the fruit bowl, though he says Oranges are a bit odd Hmm
Jam

Nutella

Flaked Almonds

Nutmeg

cinnamon

vitaminC · 16/02/2012 15:01

I make mine with just water, put sprinkle a tiny bit of brown sugar on top and add cold (soya) milk.

aliciaflorrick · 16/02/2012 15:03

The DCs have jam on theirs, I'm boring and go with a sprinkle of sugar. We have a lovely neighbour who makes barrel loads of jam every year, so she brings specially nice jam (just for me), normal day to day jam, and then jam that's maybe a bit runny for porridge - this morning it was peach jam. I love my neighbour she's fab.

carrotsandcelery · 16/02/2012 15:07

We have bananas, honey (obviously not an option for you), sultanas, flaked almonds (again maybe not for you), dried cranberries, brown sugar sometimes...

Do watch her iron levels though. I was big on porridge for my ds at this age and he loved it but was forced to move him onto fortified cereals as he became low in iron. I am sure you can introduce plenty iron rich foods instead though.

AngelDog · 16/02/2012 15:11

Raspberries or just plain.

We have it with half milk, half water.

MrsHerculePoirot · 16/02/2012 15:13

We just have cinnamon (or salmon sprinkles as DD calls it). DD is now 2.2 and we've had it pretty much everyday! She is quite happy with it plain with full fat milk and won't eat it sweetened...

scrablet · 16/02/2012 15:14

salt. Love it made half and half, but most usually have it made with just water, and pour over a bit of milk.

ppeatfruit · 16/02/2012 15:14

Another one who makes it with water here ( it tastes less rich but still creamy 'cos oats have a natural 'milk' of their own) and agree with the soaking overnight or just 10 mins before you cook it. The larger oats need longer soaking. I add molasses and or honey or rice syrup and ground cinammon, ginger and sometimes cardamom.

Sorrry to get foodie about it but it does taste better if made in the heavy cast iron saucepans and not boiled for too long.

ifancyashandy · 16/02/2012 15:16

Make mine with water & put salt & cinnamon in before I whack it in the micro. Then a teaspoon on honey & a tiny splash of skimmed milk. I love the salt/sweet combo.

UntamedShrew · 16/02/2012 15:24

I don't have it often but when I do, I do it properly: Full fat milk, Teaspoon salt, Tablespoon golden syrup and single cream

When DTs were little we had it with apricot purée (made from cooking up dried apricots in a little water) and sultanas. Yum but weetabix is much quicker!

googietheegg · 16/02/2012 15:37

I love it with cream, brown sugar and a chopped banana. Also lovely with stewed apples or peanut butter and maple syrup

GetOrfMoiiLand · 16/02/2012 15:42

Urgh no I couldn't eat it made with milk

AlmaMartyr · 16/02/2012 15:47

I make it with water, some raisins and a bit of mixed spice. I don't like it too sweet though. I have experimented with mashing up a banana or stewed apple in it before and DH liked all of those.
