What do you all put on your porridge?

I am a porridge virgin Grin. But I bought a big bag of oats today when I saw that they were one tenth of the cost of the breakfast cereals that I have been buying.

So 8 month old and I are going to have porridge every morning, and I need ideas to make it tasty and interesting. Obviously 8 month old can't have honey. Can I put golden syrup on hers?

What are you and your kids favourites?

Golden syrup the more the better. Ds2 loves that too, also with blueberries

Grumpla · 16/02/2012 15:55

One cup oats, one water, one milk.

In a pan, medium heat, stir until it is as thick as you like it.

My favourite porridge recipes:

banana (cooked in the porridge)
stewed fruit (big spoonful stirred in, so one load of stewed fruit in the fridge will last several breakfasts)
Quickie apple version - chop and microwave the apple then stir into the porridge with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Or a big spoonful of jam (plum jam is very nice with porridge)

All of the above even nicer with a splash of cream Smile

I hate the texture of those ready-brek type fake porridge things and honestly real porridge is soooo quick to make!

One measure oats, 3 measures water/milk/a mixture, pinch of salt, in microwave for about 4 mins, and usually have either brwon sugar or bananas or a tsp golden syrup. Syrup is the best :)

I'm a jam fan-get lovely fruity ones from Aldi-sour cherry or blackcurrant or raspberry. Also like raisins -cook them with the oats and they get plump and juicy.

Also if I make fruit compote I add a little of that on top (apples or apricots-rhubarb is nice at the mo)

duchesse · 16/02/2012 16:03

Chopped banana, and/or raisins, or jam.

CinnamonEstella · 16/02/2012 16:37

Wow, it really would never have occurred to me to put banana in it. Will have to try that, it seems popular, and I expect DD would enjoy that.

I have already got raisins and cinnamon in the cupboard so will try them tomorrow, then off to the supermarket with a big list to get some fruit and jams and maple syrup.

Now I don't know whether to try and make it with milk or water Confused. I will try out half and half tomorrow and soak them overnight and see what I think.

Either half and half or full milk would be more nutritious for your DD than just water.

roisin · 16/02/2012 16:46

My favourite is apple puree. I used to make apple puree, but now I just use half a pot of baby food! Grin

Nor me getorf !! A brilliant way to get reluctant DC porridge eaters eating it as someone said act out the goldilocks story with them.

Untamed if you soak oats they're nearly as quick as weetabix and much healthier Grin. I eat them uncooked in the summer.

ppeatfruit · 16/02/2012 17:01

Grumpla not nec. 'cos yr LO maybe intolerant to dairy milk. The number of L.O's with runny noses, coughs and colds would diminish if more parents were aware of the fact.

Dd quite likes a few grapes or something. Ds doesn't have anything, we never bothered to sweeten it at all when he was a baby and he absolutely hates it now if you add sugar (he is 5). Sometimes he demands more so dh sacrifices some form his bowl but if it has sugar or syrup in he notices at the first lick and turns it down.

YNK · 16/02/2012 17:26

Sweet porridge - boak!

Made with water, add milk and lot's of salt!

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 16/02/2012 17:27

honey and blueberries in mine and syrup in dd's

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/02/2012 17:28

Blueberries but I prefer Ready Brek to proper porridge.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 16/02/2012 17:30

Grated apple and cinnamon

apricots and cream

acai nectar and almonds

banana

blueberries

sometimes made with milk, sometimes with water, sometimes half and half

SardineQueen · 16/02/2012 17:31

At 8 months mine didn't know any different and happily ate it plain!

Now they get something out of

  • dollop jam
  • sprinkle raisins
  • blueberries
  • sprinkle sugar
  • um
  • that's it
Asinine · 16/02/2012 17:33

Stewed plums
Banana
Apple
Horseradish

Ok just kidding, does anyone actually read all this? Grin

PigletJohn · 16/02/2012 17:34

make it with water and bring it to the boil the night before, then lid and turn off. In the morning stir in some extra milk (it will have set) and reheat. That way there is no risk of the milk going off overnight.

I like to stir in some mixed dried fruit (for cakes) the night before. Otherwise add a little (separate) hot milk and demerara sugar or syrup. My german ex put cinammon on it which is OK.

If you have a slow cooker, and several people who like porage, that can be good. The longer you soak or cook it, the more fluid it absorbs. Spelling is optional.

PestoPenguin · 16/02/2012 17:34

I have it with honey. Under 12 months mine have had it unsweetened and have wolfed it down.

Banana's a good option.

PigletJohn · 16/02/2012 18:00

I think I'll make some now.

kilmuir · 16/02/2012 18:01

peanut butter

YNK · 16/02/2012 19:04

Salt obviously, not lot (wtf?)

YNK · 16/02/2012 19:05

Ah now I see it's lots of salt, doh!

shhhgobacktosleep · 16/02/2012 19:07

Made with skimmed milk for dh & I, full fat for DS (6) Then dh has mixed dried fruit with a drizzle of honey. DS & I hate it sweet so we have a small handful of cornflakes stirred into ours - really lovely as the cornflakes go chewy (crazy mum leading young impressionable son astray). We love our porridge here and have it every morning.
