What do you all put on your porridge?

I am a porridge virgin Grin. But I bought a big bag of oats today when I saw that they were one tenth of the cost of the breakfast cereals that I have been buying.

So 8 month old and I are going to have porridge every morning, and I need ideas to make it tasty and interesting. Obviously 8 month old can't have honey. Can I put golden syrup on hers?

What are you and your kids favourites?

I usually cut up apples but them in a pan of water on the stove on medium.. Shower.. Throw in oats and cinnamon ... Dry my hair while it simmers on low do what you like stir it a bit then yummmm. Serve up with any type milk.

startail · 16/02/2012 20:31

Made half milk, half water.
Eat boiling hot with lashings of holder syrup spiralled on top.

And absolutely no pouring cold milk round the edge! This is an absolute abomination DH, men have been divorced for less!!

Golden syrup

DS has enjoyed it since very little (7mo, now 3.10) and chopped prunes (dried or juicy tinned) have always been his favourite topping. We also do berries, banana or stewed apple. Sweeten with honey or Demerara. And then sprinkles - chopped nuts and seeds (I buy a pack rather than do it myself).

raisins and honey. Or caramelised oranges if I can be bothered (rarely) this involves chucking some orange pieces in with sugar and burning it, mmm

changemylife · 16/02/2012 21:41

Raisins and seeds yum.......

And I fired up dd's enthusiasm by getting her to make it....love watching my dcs master another recipe and learn to hone it to their tastes.

CinnamonEstella · 17/02/2012 08:46

Peanut butter, really?? Not sure I am brave enough to try that.

I have had mine (with raisins and cinnamon, very nice Grin).

DD woke at 6.30 for her milk, then went straight back to sleep and is still slumbering away, so hers is rapidly congealing still in the pan.

muller yoghurt - yes I do sliming world & love the magic porridge - even better as porridge pancakes.

ds however (5 well almost 6) has his with raisins always have, never put sugar/anything else on his.

Notinmykitchen · 17/02/2012 08:54

I can't stand the stuff, but DS loves his with raisins and blueberries, or banana.

worzelswife · 17/02/2012 19:48

I have bananas, cinnamon, raisins and dried apricots (all at different times!)
I think I must be the only person to eat it the way I do though. I'm not a big milk fan, so I put in enough milk to just cover the oats but leave it absolutely as dry as possible. It's quite biscuity and chunky in a way. Delicious! I couldn't eat a big milky bowl of porridge. Yuck! Eat my cereal dry too, no milk at all.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/02/2012 19:52

I put nutella in mine today for the first time ever. Oh My God....

Oh and it has to be Flahavans oats.

ByTheWay1 · 17/02/2012 19:54

with tinned strawberries (in syrup) lush...

mrspnut · 17/02/2012 19:56

Dd2 has nutella and I have blueberries.

Cathycat · 17/02/2012 20:08

I put blueberries in as the porridge is cooking and they burst - it's delicious!

SmileItsSunny · 17/02/2012 20:53

Cooked banana is the best. And makes me feel good as it's healthy too!
