Deep frying without deep fryer....

UltimateHumungosaur · 14/02/2012 12:06

I want to deep fry something (going to attempt black pudding scotch eggs as a treat for dh) but we don't have a fryer and I have never done it before.

So it says to use veg oil, but how much and in what?

Am grateful for any help! Thank you

Deep saucepan (you don't want it bubbling over) and a big enough layer to cover what it is you're cooking. I'm not a precise quantities kinda cook though, sorry..

Use a deep saucpan but don't fill it more than half way. You could also use a wok.

Sorry if I'm telling you something that you're fully aware of already, but be obsessively careful of spills etc, especially if you have kids. Hot oil can result in the most horrendous burns.

Make sure you dont re-use the oil, the heating process changes it and makes it cancerous. Not asbestos cancerous but still not something you would want to ingest.

I use a wok

I have a deep heavy saucepan that is only ever used for deep frying, so I don't care what state it gets in. No more than half full of oil, preferably only a third full (I prefer Sunflower if you have it), and watch it like a hawk. Don't get sidetracked by kids etc.

FrozenChocolate · 14/02/2012 18:12

I use sunflower oil for months cooking. How often should I be changing it?

UltimateHumungosaur · 14/02/2012 18:38

Thank you all will try the wok and make sure kids are occupied and in another room well away.

Be careful using a wok- they are less stable than pans and are also thinner, so the oil will get very hot very quickly.
