Come on... has anyone ever made a white sauce or cake mixture with a few flour mites in it? Added protein I say.

cate16 · 13/02/2012 20:04

Twinklebum · 20/02/2012 19:41

Flour mites? What are flour mites? Confused

ThePieSmuggler · 20/02/2012 19:42

Noooooo! I'm the first to admit I'm a slattern but even I draw the line at this!

Catsmamma · 20/02/2012 19:44

is this not why we are supposed to sieve flour? ;)

FannyFifer · 20/02/2012 19:45

I will admit I had cakes all ready to go in oven when I discovered my flour had weevils, I fed them to DP.

Twinklebum · 20/02/2012 19:52

Can someone explain please? Are these thing real living things what do they look like? How will I know if I have them? Confused

TheLurkiestLurker · 20/02/2012 20:04

Eeeew we had them once, blurgh!! I put my flour in the freezer now when I get it home as that's meant to kill the eggs (apparently - please don't tell me this isn't true!)

BeanutPutter · 20/02/2012 20:04

Your flour will move if there are mites in it. Believe me you will know! My MIL once showed me her 'organic' flour, I was gobsmacked as it was full of them. She then proceeded to tell me that is how she knew it was good! Shock

It took me ages to explain that organic doesn't mean alive Grin

DeepPurple · 20/02/2012 20:06

Grin at beanutputter

Twinklebum · 20/02/2012 21:24

I've been staring at my flour for the last 20 mins and am pleased to say it hasn't moved! Yay no mites here Grin

BeanutPutter · 20/02/2012 21:52

Perhaps they were just sleeping tonight... ;)

Twinklebum · 20/02/2012 21:57

Agghhh don't say that, the kids want pancakes for breakfast and I'm not brave enough to tell them no at stupid o'clock in the morning!

Hmm sleeping mites, do they ever sleep?

BiscuitNibbler · 20/02/2012 21:59

I have only had this happen once, and I only noticed after I had put a huge heaped dessert spoonful into the cottage pie I was making for Dh (to thicken it up).

I hesitated a moment, then thought bugger it, and continued to cook it and he was none the wiser. Have to admit I would not have eaten it myself.

Mind you, living in the Middle East as a child the bread was always heaving with weevils, so I have consumed my fair share for one lifetime.

BeanutPutter · 20/02/2012 22:30

I am kidding. You will definitely know. If they do wake up in the morning then just don't tell the DCs. Wink

chickling · 21/02/2012 18:07

Ha haWink loving the feedback. I must admit I made a sauce with them once. They're very hard to spot in wholemeal flour. Just stare at it for a while and if any flecks move- bingo! Apparently we have eyelash mites as well that eat dead skin while we sleep...
