Chocolate cake without vanilla?

DP is about to make a chocolate cake but we've run out of vanilla extract. Will it make much difference to the recipe leaving it out?

I've always ignored vanilla extract in choc cake recipes, it hasn't made the slightest difference in my opinion. If it's supposed to be chocolate, what's the need for vanilla anyway? Someone will come along now and scientifically prove the need for vanilla now won't they...

I don't usually bother too much about the vanilla as I find it's overpowered by the chocolate. I've learned to keep some caster sugar with a vanilla pod in it so I usually have vanilla sugar for cakes etc.

Nope. No need for vanilla - your flavouring is chocolate, not vanilla!
