just wondering as it's very rare that we do. hubbie comes in fairly late at night-if he's not working away!-and i can't keep the kids waiting for their tea so they have theirs when they come home from school.

3 days a week we do. I consider it a really important thing to do and I hope we are still doing it when the girls are teenagers. I look forward to them joining in when dh and I get on to politics or something more serious than Harry Potter

We do twice a day every day (Breakfast and dinner) and three times a day at weekends. It's the time we come together and talk about our days. It often gives me valuable insights into what has happened at school and how they're all feeling. I think it helps them to eat well too. My baby is really enjoying joining in now and copying what we're doing with cutlery.

We do it because I always did it as a kid and I've never really considered any other way.

NotQuiteCockney · 23/01/2006 19:56

We do it every night. Sometimes DH doesn't make it, but I eat with the boys, whatever. Sometimes we have radio or music on, but no telly ever ever ever.

Recently, over the holidays, DS1 got to have a snack in front of the telly, and thought that was the loveliest treat in the world!

Rhubarb · 23/01/2006 19:56

Yup. I eat with the kids at breakfast time and if I'm here at dinner time too. We all eat together in the evenings, and every weekend we have a 'special' meal, like a roast or something. We have wine and the kids get grape juice that they can pretend is wine!

Bit haphazard round here but generally we sit down with ds at lunchtime (although either dh or me is usually bobbing up and down making food/clearing up/getting ds's pudding/drink). Teatime I'll sit with him but only have a cup of tea myself (or snaffle some of his if it's scrummy). He's two so eats around five which is way too early for us. When we are working, our nanny sits down with him but she has her own lunch when he's gone to bed - her choice, think she prefers the peace and quiet.

Dh and I tend to eat our supper on trays in front of the TV/DVD, I'm afraid.

Every day for breakfast and dinner, which we have at about 6.45 most days. If DH is home late (about twice a week), we hang on for him to get in and eat together, if he gets back before 7.30. We eat all meals together at weekends. We have been doing this since DD was 1 (she's now 3). I'm glad it's possible to do this, as it's a nice time of day, when we have a good chat.

Eve · 23/01/2006 19:59

yes, every meal we are together except breakfast, as we are all so different in the mronings, some are early birds and some ie. me and DS2 are so grunpy in the morning that being social is just too much!

littlemissbossy · 23/01/2006 20:00

we try to whenever possible but DH isn't always home - the kids always sit together at the table though and I'll eat with them if DH is going to be really late

fisil · 23/01/2006 20:01

yes.

IlanaK · 23/01/2006 20:01

We do almost every evening. SOmetimes at lunch too, but not always. I think it is really important.

Bugsy2 · 23/01/2006 20:11

I don't have a dh, but on the days I don't work, we all have the last meal of the day together, sitting down at the table - no tv. At weekends, the big meal will be a proper sit down job - could be either lunch or dinner.

We do. Breakfast, lunch and tea. Only exception is a picnic with the teddy bears! I love it. I never ate with my family growing up, we all had tea at different times. Perhaps thats why I do it all the time now.

MummyJules · 23/01/2006 22:13

P never wants to - has very weird eating habits and sometimes difficult shifts at work. If D and I are at home in the day I will eat Breakfast and Lunch and occasionally tea with her although it depends on what we are having and if I am going out e.t.c
Ideally I would love the whole sitting round the table thing but realistically its not going to happen sadly.

mears · 23/01/2006 22:13

We do in the evening. Eldest 18 yrs, youngest 12 yrs.

Frizbetheexpansionset · 23/01/2006 22:14

We do when dh is home from work! otherwise its just me and dd and ss when he's here.

moondog · 23/01/2006 22:15

When we moved into this house 18 month ago, first thing we did was remove hideous b/fast bar and island things so as to manoeuvre our huge table in .

Who could do serious eating and drinking perched on a wobbly stool ffs!?

brimfull · 23/01/2006 22:15

yes we eat dinner together every night.

We're lucky now that dh is home at 5:30,it wasn't possible in his last job 7 years ago,but this is one brilliant benefit of being self employed!

soapbox · 23/01/2006 22:22

Mon-Thurs the nanny has tea with the children and we eat later. At the table though

Fri-Sun we eat together at every meal, always round the table except for breakfast which is sometimes taken in front of the telly

notasheep · 23/01/2006 22:27

Yep we all do breakfast and dinner in the week and all three at the weekends.

suedonim · 24/01/2006 01:22

I've always eaten with the children and dh when he's home, I think it's dispiriting to eat on your own. All four of mine were home over Xmas/NY, plus a DIL and a GF. We had a fabby time round the table, lots of laughs and jokes and just great fun.
