Toddler meals for the train

I take 20mo DS on the train every day to and from nursery (next to my work). So far, I've given him a banana to snack on on the way home but it's a fairly long journey (1 hour door to door) and he's usually hungry when he leaves nursery and then quite ravenous by the time we get home and I can give him a proper dinner.
I've started taking other snacks for him - sandwiches, breadsticks but I don't want to really feed him sandwiches every night - especially as he often insists on toast for breakfast too.
Anybody got any easy and healthy toddler meals that are easy to keep in a sealed container but also not so messy that he can spill all over a crowded train?

Does he like houmous? A little pot of that with some carrot and cucumber sticks could be a nice change. Or some Philly in a pot.

cubes of cheese, grapes.
I get what you're saying, not wanting him to have too much bread. How about chunks of waxy new potato, plain or seasoned to his taste? Cherry toms, fingers of cucumber.
