Recipes without any tomatoes.

My DD has been having some stomach/rash issues and on the advice of the doctor I'm keeping a food diary to try and pinpoint anything. It's become apparent that tomatoes could be a problem. She has never been able to eat raw tomatoes (nor has her sister they bring her out in a rash) but we have cooked tomatoes in things quite often throughout the week. I'm going to not serve any for a while to see if this helps but coming to my meal plan I'm struggling to think of things that don't contain toms. If anyone could give me some suggestions and I can go from there.

I cook these fairly regularly;
Chilli - there is always some in the freezer for days I'm working.
Roast - meat, potatoes, carrots, broccoli.
Pasta with tomato based sauce.
Jacket pots with tuna or beans/cheese.
HM pizza with tomato sauce and lots of veggies. (can you make pizza without tom sauce as they love pizza night and they eat veg the don't normally - mushrooms/peppers/onions.)
Curry (sometimes tomato based) with rice.
Fish rice peas.
Fish fingers, chips, peas/beans.
Paella.
Meatballs (tomato sauce Hmm ) HM wedges.
Beans on toast grated cheese (quick tea night)
Lamb casserole (when I can get the lamb cheap)
Salmon (made into fish fingers/with pasta broccoli cheese/made chinesey with noodles)
Reading that I can't believe how much of a problem I might have caused, no wonder she's so unhappy at times Sad

I'm on a budget but fairly competent at cooking and I have time in the afternoon some days to cook while DD2 sleeps. Though other days I'm out all day and have 20 mins to knock something together.

Thank you if you got through this post :) what can I serve instead??

OK I am a not keen on toms person and I like cooking

Things that come to mind
Cauliflower cheese
White fish in mornay sauce
Well anything in mornay sauce in fact Grin it's delicious

Stuff like chicken kiev / homemade nuggets / all that brown / breaded idea with veg and mash etc

Pizza express do a pizza with white sauce instead of tomato will look and link Smile

SardineQueen · 04/02/2012 21:11

Hmmm pizza express menu doesn't have it any more but I am sure for a while they were offering bechemal sauce instead of tomato sauce as the base

KenDoddsDadsDog · 04/02/2012 21:12

Toad in the hole
Macaroni cheese with bacon bits
Pasta pesto

SardineQueen · 04/02/2012 21:13

I do stews and curries and pies without toms all the time as I am not keen on them in cooking.

My method - I get the shopping delivered and I see what meat is on offer on the website and build meals round that. So if you have eg cheap chicken offer round your way you can cook with something like cream and mushrooms rather than toms or whatever you think Smile

mmmmmchocolate · 04/02/2012 21:15

Thank you sardine queen! Cauliflower cheese is a good one, can do that with lots of diff veg. I do make HM nuggets but not that often as I don't always have chicken breasts in but will get some next time I go to the super market.

White sauce I can get quite easily so will give that one a try. I would never have thought of that.

Off to google Mornay sauce... I usually do butter or parsley sauce so a revamp of our fish meals would be good :)

I'm another tomato hater, although I can stomach passata or very finely chopped fresh tomatoes in a curry.

I make pizzas using pesto instead of tomato sauce.
Pasta with pesto, or with a cheesy creamy sauce.
Risotto.
Coconut based curries - or aloo gobhi with yoghurt.
Omelettes with wedges and salad.
Cheese on toast instead of beans on toast - can make it really nice by adding mustard / onions / lightly sauteed leeks / spinach if you like it (I don't) / spring onions.
Stir fry and rice or noodles.

SardineQueen · 04/02/2012 21:17

It's just white sauce with cheese in - you want to use strong cheese so a bit of a strong cheddar or parmesan will get the flavour through in a way a mild cheese won't however much you put in.

I love cheese Grin

SardineQueen · 04/02/2012 21:20

Omlettes sound good to me, that's a good one. Or scrambled eggs.

Spanish omlette?

Taffeta · 04/02/2012 21:20

I make bolognese without tomatoes. Reduced red wine and stock instead, plus bacon and the usual veg ( carrot/onion/celery ) and mince. Cook very slowly for one and a half hours and finish with a knob of butter. My DC like toms/tom sauce but I've always made bolognese like this and they hate it with toms now.

bananarama05 · 04/02/2012 21:21

I'll have a proper think but a couple if things come to mind, do you like Mexican type food? Fajitas (no salsa obviously), tacos etc? Served with home made potato wedges and corn on the cob?

And chicken in white wine casserole style dishes.

Will attempt to think of some more but am feeling a little brain dead watching take me out the gossip afterwards bit, its been a long week ok! :)

Catsmamma · 04/02/2012 21:21

i know it has some tomato in but we often use red pesto on a pizza base....I hate the pappy-ness of tomatoes and the fact that a tomato sauce always seems to damp the base too much.

SharkBite · 04/02/2012 21:22

Tonight DD's had salmon with pasta and peas with cream run through (would have used creme fraiche/philadelphia depending on what i have)

SardineQueen · 04/02/2012 21:22

If you are on a budget and have time to cook, then pies are surely the way forward. You can make a lush steak and kidney, shepherds or cottage when the meat component is on offer, without toms, easily. They last too Smile

Taffeta · 04/02/2012 21:22

yy to eggs - omelette and dippy eggs v popular here
And cheese on toast
And mac cheese with bacon
Fish pie
Cottage and shepherds pie

Meatballs with jam a la Ikea!

mmmmmchocolate · 04/02/2012 21:23

I seem to remember either dominos or pizza but doing a white garlic and herb type base a while back.

Toad in the hole yum will do that too. We have pesto pasta often (brought the low fat one last time though and the DDs hated it!!

I never make pies I have 5 unopened packs of pastry in the freezer for some reason will look into that. There was a thread on here the other day about how to make Cornish pasties that had me drooling!

Taffeta · 04/02/2012 21:24

yy Sardine Queen, DS's new fave is chicken and leek pie with puff mmmmmm

SardineQueen · 04/02/2012 21:25

I have recently had my eyes opened to the joys of bought pastry, and it has revolutionised life for the whole family.

rampant exaggeration

It is good though Smile Make a pie!

iseenodust · 04/02/2012 21:26

Fish pie
Risotto - huge variety ( I follow Delia's in the oven version so none of that ladling for hours)
Pizza express does a pizza with sort of garlic butter instead of tom sauce layer.
Mashed sweet potato & butternut squash with piece of grilled chicken/burger

SardineQueen · 04/02/2012 21:28

Mmmmm risotto

bananarama05 · 04/02/2012 21:34

Carbonara type pasta.
Creamy korma type curry.
DD had homemade fishcakes and sweet potato wedges for dinner. Tesco sell bags of frozen salmon/cod/haddock already skinned and chopped so dead easy to chuck fish dishes together.

mmmmmchocolate · 04/02/2012 21:41

DD1 is a bit funny with eggs but will try Spanish omelette as she did used to have it.

Pesto on the pizza is def one to try!

Thanks for the tomato less bolognaise taffeta I'll try that for the freezer.

Love fajitas and tacos. I use the ready made packet spices will have to check they don't contain toms.

Catsmamma I didn't realise red pesto had tomato in? I need to stay away though incase it's an allergy as she is getting progressively worse ):

Taffeta I was actually thinking of making DP drive me to ikea tomorrow to get the meatball sauce and jam Grin hope the pesky snow goes away!

The pasta philli and peas are a staple here too!!

The only thing is you take away the toms and it gets replaced with something that's not as low fat :-/

iseenodust · 04/02/2012 21:48

That thing where you fry minced pork, add a few spices & a little soy then eat wrapped in lettuce leaves. Kids love finger food/novelty.

Selks · 04/02/2012 23:05

Chicken supreme
Pork stroganoff
'blonde' pizza using a smear of pesto and some blobs of creme fraiche instead of tomato (it's delicious)
Fish stew
Beef casserole
Spinach and ricotta lasagne
Portobello mushrooms stuffed with goats cheese
Stuffed peppers (can be stuffed with a spiced rice / mince mix)
Sausage casserole
Frittata
Roasted veg couscous
Leek risotto with brie chunks

All tomato-free

SardineQueen · 05/02/2012 11:25

I would snaffle up the stuffed mushrooms, and leek and brie risotto in short order! They sound lovely.
