hi suzy

i will be eternally grateful for the advice you once gave me about defrosting a chicken in hot water in the sink

i now do it EVERY time i have to defrost a chicken (amongst other things)

dh calls it mumsnetting the chicken

"have you taken the chicken out of the freezer or are you just going to mumsnet it"

My mother showed me one. We freeze ds's milk (goats milk which can be a bit hard to find so we bulk buy) and once I forgot to defrost. Well my Mum put the bottle in a big bucket of cold water and it worked in about an hour. I still don't know how cold water worked I could understand hot water working.

I've always been told no. . .that once you've defrosted and cooked meat, you can't freeze it again. It's bad from the point of view of food safety and of texture/taste. This info came from a caterer friend in the US who took a food safety course as part of her training. But that's the US.

When I buy meat or fish or say smoked salmon from M&S, often the package says, "Contents have been previously frozen. Further freezing will not affect taste or quality." So I just don't know. I, personally, don't thaw and then refreeze after cooking. And most people I've asked don't either.

Yes you can freeze raw meat, defrost it thoroughly, cook it and refreeze it, make sure you defrost and cook the cooked meat thoroughly though.
