Have been veggie since I was 13 (well, except a chicken lapse when pg/bfing ds) and really want to become a proper vegan. Anyone have any tips of getting started/any good books? Thanks.

Hi I'm vegan and have been for about 9 years. Was vegetarian for about 10 years before. I agree it can be difficult to eat out. Also get SO fed up of being asked that question What DO you eat?! Have had no real probs being vegan during pregnancy or breastfeeding. DD is being brought up as veggie but eats lots of vegan food too.

Love being vegan and don't think could go back to being vegetarian - though wouldn't be human if didn't miss few things - stringy mozarella on pizza!

There are many good vegan alternatives out there. I like the sweetened with apple juice soya milk. The alpro range of dairy free foods are good I think.

These are books I found good:
"Easy Vegan Cooking" Leah Leneman
"Vegan Feasts" Rose Elliot
"Vegan Cookbook" Alan Wakeman and Gordon Baskerville
"Encyclopaedia of vegetarian living" Peter Cox

Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz is good - also Vegan cupcakes rule the world by the same author.

Was vegetarian for over 25 years then went vegan and have never regretted it. health is so much better than before and my diet is far more varied and adventurous.

Hi alirosie.... just seen this and was curious myself. I have been on and off the vegan wagon, fell off when pregnant (craved cheese and ham something dreadful). Now, back on.

any other vegan mnetters out there?

I'm vegan, and have been for over ten years. This thread is four and a half years old! Do you want to start a new one afresh?

anyabanya · 15/06/2010 08:49

yes, a new one sounds good!

I am curious to know how other people cope with - well- the endless comments really. My mother is already freaking because I hope to breastfeed, and I keep telling her to go and research if she is so concerned and then have the doscussion with me but she will not. (prejudice emoticon).
