Harry Potter cake - turret problem?

Dd2's 8th birthday next week and she's having a Harry Potter themed sleepover. Dh was wondering about making a castle (Hogwarts) cake. I am pretty good at basic cake making, but this scares me.

How do people make turrets for a castle cake? I googled - one person used styrofoam and another used upside down ice cream cones. I never realised some of those fancy cakes were not edible! He was covering the styrofoam in icing...seemed very odd! Does anyone else have any ideas for turrets or ice cream cones the way to go?

I make the cake and dh decorates - I'm not patient and steady handed enough for decorating!

I made one a while back. I used upside down ice cream cones covered in fondant. I didn't use the whole cone, just the straight pointy bit. I'm not an expert but thought it looked pretty good.

If they are small turrets I make them enirely out of sugarpaste, so they are solid. If you want bigger turrets then I would make a card cone, cover in cling film roll modeling paste out and cover cone, leave to dry for a day then remove cone and leave to dry for a further couple of days on foam.

Thanks. Perhaps I'll go for ice cream cones. I'm sure this will be a disaster and I'll be up half of Saturday night baking another a cake.

Swiss rolls cut to size and wrapped in sugarpaste icing.

I made a fairy castle & the turrets/towers were made from swiss roll wrapped in fondant icing then an ice cream cone coated in royal icing & dipped in coloured sugar with the | || || | bit that went round the top of the swiss roll made from sugarpaste.
