Having been in factories that make all sorts of ham I don't actually eat it myself, DP like wafer thin ham for his sandwiches but has banned me from talking about what it's made from. Wouldn't give it to DD though.

Wafer thin of cheaper square ham is made from the offcuts of other hams, it's still ham just not top end quality, it's mushed together with salts and water etc to bulk it up a bit and cooked in a giant sausage hence the shape. With "nice" ham it's cooked on the bone so still resembles the pigs leg.

Haven't come across turkey ham though in my travels but am a bit dubious.

thanks for that miggy. if we do it (can't believe I'm close to caving in to dh) would buy them in Mar and chop their piggy heads off end Oct - something like that. have got a couple of empty calving sheds we could use I suppose, I assumed they would need to be in arks in a field. good idea about turning over veg patch!

yes would need defra number etc. yawn.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

would you get old spot again? any other suggestions?

miggy · 14/01/2006 22:34

my cunning plan, were I more organised and could be bothered, would be to have a sow of a nice breed like a kune kune (very sweet, lovely, can graze and dont dig up ground) and put it to a boar like an old spot to make edible piglets.
So would have cute pig we didnt eat, to appease children etc and supply of nice size pigs for freezer.
Otherwise old spot are very attractive, fairly easy to obtain for an old breed and look nice, but much slower maturing than a modern hybrid.
the old John Seymour book on self sufficiency is still by far the best general guide if you need one.

loads of info here

PrincessPeaHead · 14/01/2006 22:47

thanks miggy.
slightly embarrassed to admit I HAVE the john seymour book! must read it on pigs again. also hugh f-w good on pigs.
thought about buying my dh a weekend at pig paradise for his birthday (march) but that would just be asking for trouble - he'd be bound to come back wth a piglet under each arm...

need to think about the logistics of this I think!!!

PrincessPeaHead · 14/01/2006 22:48

like the look of the oxford sandy and black on that site!

Janh · 14/01/2006 22:53

How could you buy dear little baby pigs and grow them up and then chop their heads off???

(I am a carnivore but I never eat anybody I know)

RachD · 14/01/2006 22:59

We used to eat packaged ham , from the supermarket, until me saw a tv programme about it, and realised it was probably only a small % of actual real meat
Felt really ill.
Now, only buy from supermarket deli - ham on the bone.
So expensive.
But, so nice.
Even as I walk down the 'aisle' of pre-packed ham, it makes me feel really ill.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 14/01/2006 23:01

im with QOQ - cant afford NICE HAM so get packaged stuff - i dont eat a lot of it, Jess NEVER eats it (getting her to eat anything other than fruit ang veg is a nightmare) and DH has it in his sandwiches.... he's a chef but couldnt care less what he eats!

Had BAMBI burgers for tea tonight though, and Jess DID manage a few mouthfulls - was quite impressed at my 18 month old eating Bambi and Asaparagus!

PrincessPeaHead · 14/01/2006 23:04

I'm a hard hearted bitch, janh

Janh · 14/01/2006 23:06

How are your hens, pph?

PrincessPeaHead · 14/01/2006 23:10

ok.... one of them is being badly pecked on her bottom though! not sure what I'm going to do about that though...

NannyL · 14/01/2006 23:13

YES YES YES

most of the "ham" sold in the big 4 supermarkets is made from pig from "europe" where the PIGS SPEND THEIR WHOLE LIVES IN CAGES ONLY SLIGHTLY BIGGER THAN PIG ITSELF with NO ROOM TO MOVE OR TURN around etc. It is ILLEGAL to treat pigs that way in this country, but as its cheeper the supermarkets use that to make their ham and all but their 'finest' pork products.

I would by 'normal' ham from waitrose tho cause its made from british pig that live reasonable lives

tabitha · 14/01/2006 23:21

I second what Nanny L has said.
I also only buy British ham as the welfare standards for pigs here are higher than in the rest of Europe. Unfortunately this means that the price is also (usually) higher but tbh I would rather be veggue than buy cheap foreign ham.
It also really pi$$es me off when supermarkets have Dutch/Danish ham and bacon on special offer.

Nixz · 15/01/2006 00:20

sweetkitty -
turkeyham

Blu · 15/01/2006 00:40

What is a Bambi burger?

Janh · 15/01/2006 10:43

Missed your reply last night, pph - I just looked up bullying hens on google and the NFU website says:

Could you do that? (Or get someone else to!)

Janh · 15/01/2006 10:44

Or you could chop her head off and eat her

Do no blush, hausfrau, welfare standards for cheeses are OK in the EU
