What does your child eat that children are not 'meant' to like?

Ds (2.9) loves olives, stilton, brie, goat's cheese, Indian takeaways, and he and his dad are currently working their way through a jar of Grey Poupon mustard.

I can't bear most of those and wouldn't have touched any of them as a child, along with many other hated things. How did I end up with a child that was so adventurous?

black pepper
curry
radishes
raw cabbage
horseradish sauce

Meanoldmummy · 17/01/2006 14:30

...oh, and Marmite, thick as tar...I like the stuff too, but the amount DS1 (3)_likes makes me wince. His dad lets him have as much as he wants if I'm not watching!

Where to start? Suffice to say the sluglet is well known in the posh cheese shop where (aged 4) she knows the brands and names of most of the cheeses and can have an educated discussion with the owner about the relative merits of Spanish picos vs a mature stilton. I've seen her abandon chocolate when some tasty cheese came on the horizon.

She was slugging coffee grounds aged 2, was swiping the slice of lime from our G&T before she could stand on her own, and will happily tuck into chorizo, salami and loves the haggis type sausages she discovered in Hungary last summer.

The only thing I have ever seen her reject out of hand is tofu.

Oh and garlic too. She's notorious for getting a tub of garlic stuffed olives, removing and eating the garlic first then polishing off the olives.

She eats bunches of corriander (imagine the looks that one gets in the Tescos checkout) and ever since I told her teddies love brocolli, demands it at every opportunity.

kiwi on its own peeled

Camembert cheese, broccoli, asparagus, dark bitter chocolate

Doesn't like pudding generally or sweets

dd3, 21 months, likes red wine. yes i know she shouldn't have it, of course, i let her sip it to persuade her it's horrible wine not ribena. but she likes it so my aversion technique failed miserably, now she's always trying to drink it

ditto gin and tonic.

still haven't found a foodstuff which dd3 won't eat. unlike my other two...

mckenzie · 17/01/2006 21:17

I was in a very long checkout queue at Waitrose the other day and DS and DD were both starting to get bored and fed up. So I gave them both a snack, from the food that I was waiting to pay for. 4 year old DS had some king prawns and 10 month old DD nibbled on a crabstick. The 90 year old Granny behind me thought it was hilarious. I don't mind the crabsticks but with DS's tastebuds my shopping bills are getting higher and higher.

Apart from potatoes dts (4) love every kind of veggie and fruit. Their nursery school are forever commenting on the fact they enjoy their snack (usually fruit) more than when they get a biscuit.

Feel very chuffed, have no idea why they are like that. Now if they would just be as happy eating meat!

tessasmum · 17/01/2006 21:58

At 10 months DD discovered garlic stuffed olives and Green and Blacks dark chocolate. Still loves both at nearly 3.
If only she would eat fruit and veg!!

slug · 19/01/2006 08:56

Fennel, try adding a drop of red wine to a cup of water. We do that for the sluglet so she can feel like she's a grown up at sit down dinners.

MaryP0p1 · 19/01/2006 09:01

My daughter eats everything, my son nothing.
My daughter's favorite is rabbit!!!!

cathyspam · 19/01/2006 09:12

garlic, curry, strong cheese, tandoori chicken, lemons, grapefruit and all other fruit but wont touch potatoes or chips!

fennel · 19/01/2006 10:11

slug, i have this vague feeling that it's illegal to let them even have a sip of alcohol til they're three? maybe i'm wrong on that.

slug · 19/01/2006 21:08

Sod that! You are merely being 'continental' in your approach.

Skribble · 19/01/2006 21:16

My 2 love brocclli (trees), raw carrotts, chicken korma from the indian not the bland one out of a jar, DD loves sweet and sour too, and one hates chips and pototoes.

Nixz · 19/01/2006 22:13

dd also calls broccoli 'trees', she loves it!

Skribble · 20/01/2006 21:33

Tried cauliflower and called it white trees but not accepted the same, funny I hate cauliflower and love broccoli.

nowanearlyNicemum · 20/01/2006 21:34

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 20/01/2006 23:23
