I'm not a v good veggie and give in to the occaisional bits of meat. I craved really crap wafer thin ham in pregnancy. I gave in & ate it. Then it stopped.

rushofbloodtothefeet · 05/01/2012 18:41

I gave in to, to the odd bit of roast chicken or cold grilled chicken or crispy bacon. Only very occasionally. I do eat fish though, so upped the quantity to try and compensate.

Doesn't really count but I was in a veggie phase when I conceived and leapt straight back on the bacon - but urges soon died down / were replaced with fresh tomatoes, chopped with lots of salt and pepper and a bit of oil. Think it may be a salt thing rather than a meat thing?

Oh god I had to eat corned beef when pregnant with dd, the shame. I used to eat it with a fork stright from the can. I have never eaten beef at any other time before or since.

thisisyesterday · 05/01/2012 20:10

yes, happened to me.

i have to admit i did give in to the cravings a couple of times!

sonicrainboom · 05/01/2012 20:12

Yes it's normal. Your body might might need something that is in the meat - why not try to eat a small bit ? Nothing bad will happen, well at least it didn't happen to me and others I know.

Abirdinthehand · 06/01/2012 00:53

It's LAMB I want, ffs. Or steak might do at a pinch. Not even chicken or something. Lamb curry. It's all I can think about. It's proably the iron / protein hit I'd get - I'm living on cornflakes at the moment.

I do eat the odd bit of fish anyhow (I know, not a PROPER veggie) but the thought of it now makes me retch. DH s veggie too and he's a bit Hmm about the lamb curry (i think he thinks it's an excuse iyswim - we both gave up meat for ethics rathr than not liking it), but I'm craving it so much I considered sneaking out one time and eating one on the sly!!

My friend is a pretty strict vegan and she ate some meat in pregnancy - I'm just feeling a bit foolish wanting it, y'know? Like I'm giving in. But I'm thinking about it ALL THE TIME.

I ate a plate of mince when I was pregnant with DD... It made me cry, lol

DP still thinks it's hilarious Hmm (he eats meat) me sat there eating mince crying about the cow, but eating it anyway because it tasted great.

I had cravings for meat and gave in once. To a mouthful of roast beef. It wasn't worth it. I did start eating fish in pregnancy, because a nutrionist told me to. I was often low on iron. I still eat (sustainably sourced) fish about once a month now. So I'm now a pescetarian really.

I had this. I was very anaemic during pregnancy, despite eating all the right things as a veggie and taking iron supplements. My MW suggested that I might be craving it because of my lack of iron.

I started with fish -- we were on holiday at the coast and everyone was having fish and chips. I just couldn't stop myself any longer.

By the end of that week, I'd had KFC and a steak (the two things I'd been longing for) and haven't looked back since Blush

ghosteditor · 09/01/2012 12:45

Not me! I'm 39+ weeks now and have been veggie for 15 years, as I dislike the taste and the concept. I haven't had any cravings, really, and my blood results have all been fine. No desire whatsoever to eat meat, but I'm a strict veggie and not only for ethical reasons, so I'm not surprised.

However, if you can't stop thinking about it, why not go ahead? It's not like a few months of eating meat negates a general lifestyle choice on ethical grounds. And maybe your body is trying to tell you something?

JollyBear · 09/01/2012 12:48

I cried whilst tucking into beef spag bol. I'd been a veggie for 15years! Only ever beef though.

If thats what your body is craving go for it! I only eat a very small amount of meat on ethical grounds, but since ive been pregnant Ive been craving bacon all the time, so have eaten a few bacon buttys. But have made sure its organic bacon.

nickelhasababy · 10/01/2012 15:28

your body is telling you that you need either protein or iron.

do you take supplements?
eat loads of nuts, and get some Spatone Iron sachets and put in your juice.

that should stave off any cravings.
