Hi

I am going to make my son a birthday cake for his 5th birthday and need a good simple chocolate sponge recipe if anyone can help. I am going to make a 12" square cake but cant find a large enough recipe. I will bake 2 cakes so that i can sandwich them together with jam then i will need to cover it with some sort of chocolate covering as he doesnt like icing. I am also going to decorate it by making a sonic the hedgehog face - so any helpful ideas would be very much appreciated. I assume i will just make a basic victoria sponge and substitute some of the flour for cocoa powder.

Interested in any advice.

Many thanks for any help offered.

Emma

The last time I made a cake of that size I used this recipe www.cherrymenlove.com/foodrecipes/2011/02/valentines-chocolate-cake.html I multiplied the quantities so it was 8 eggs, 1lb of flour etc, and used aldi's choc spread instead of icing.

I've made a hedgehog before, but it was baked in an oval pudding basin, and I used matchmakers for spines.

Hope it all turns out really well for you!
