hello,
I got this for christmas and, excited and fed up of turkey, I tried the trapani rigatoni yesterday. it was awful! Im sure I did it right, but to me raw garlic and chilli does not taste nice?!
Now im loath to try any others! Can you recommend the best ones? or should i just shelve the book forever more?

We love it in my house, but no way do they take 30 minutes. We did he Pizza one, but I'm not totally convinced about the sauce. We have also done the Cathrine wheel Sausage, Piri Piri Chicken, and Spaghetti Alla Puttanesca (love the Garlic bread from that, so easy!).
I also dress my salads his way now (in the ready salad bag).

Hulababy · 28/12/2011 12:30

I've done a fair few from the book and they have been lovely. Mind, it always takes me longer than 30 minutes! I don't always make the desserts.

Some that have been particularly succesful here are:

  • Oozy mushroom risotto and spinach salad
  • chicken pie with french style peas and sweet carrot smash
  • mustard chicken with dauphinoise greens
  • black forest affogato
  • tray baked chicken with squashed potatoes and creamed spinach
  • sticky pan fried scallops with sweet chilli rice and dressed greens
  • crispy slamon with jazzed up rice, baby courgette salad and guacamole
gallicgreetings · 28/12/2011 12:40

we love the one with sweet potato, chilli, coriander and feta cheese just all smashed up together.

ivykaty44 · 28/12/2011 19:26

Watch the tomato soup - we used a very expensive good quality basmatic vinegar and the amount he said to put in made the soup unedible - it was disgusting Sad two TABLESPOONs two teaspoons would have been enough

LydiaWickham · 28/12/2011 19:34

We've enjoyed a lot of them, but you do need more than 30 minutes.

Clayhead · 28/12/2011 20:04

I love this book but then we love the rigatoni one!

Also favourites are

tray baked chicken
steak sandwich
jerk chicken
piri piri chicken
the herby cod one
pregnant pasta
cauliflower cheese
duck salad
pork fillet
picnic
summer lasagne

I don't always do the puddings and it usually takes 45 -50 minutes.

ThompsonTwins · 28/12/2011 20:12

My colleague qualified as a chef. He likes a lot of recipes in the book but says there's no way he could make the dishes in 30 minutes!

Clayhead · 28/12/2011 20:15

I couldn't do them in 30 minutes but it is nice to have a book which doesn't contain recipes which say 'soak overnight' or 'leave for three hours'! Also nice to have all the side dishes, things I would never have thought of putting together.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 31/12/2011 16:38

The tapas is divine. I could eat the chorizo with garlic and honey until I popped!

PotteringAlong · 31/12/2011 16:45

The peanut chicken satay one is a delight!

pregnantpause · 31/12/2011 18:54

Right, i am going to try again then. The fishcakes (because i have the ingredients in, i am not deliberatly choosing an unrecommended one) then i will pass My. Finał. Judgement! (although i might try the tapas regardless- it sounds lovely)

Loved the fish cakes and salad with them.

I like getting the dc involved. We do the recipes on a weekend - 1 dc + 1 parent. Once the ingredients are bought and measured the recipes are pretty fast.

ThatVikRinA22 · 31/12/2011 19:37

we live on this book

the jools pregnant pasta meal is lush
the super fast beef hash is lush
the crusted cod is lush
the pork chop one is lush
the cheats pizza is lush
the fish cakes are lush
the kids fave is the chicken pie meal...
the cauli mac and cheese meal is devine!

i need more pans to try the rest.

ThatVikRinA22 · 31/12/2011 19:38

oh i forgot the steak sandwich....also lush!

ThatVikRinA22 · 31/12/2011 19:39

oh and the quick sunday dinner one....expensive but yummy! was bit dubious about salad with a sunday lunch but it is honestly scrummy....

BloooCowWonders · 31/12/2011 19:41

Dc favourite is always pasta dishes but we've had a lot of success with the fish recipes too.
Meals always plenty for us - 2+3

FreeButtonBee · 01/01/2012 18:53

The chorizo and honey is awesome and the stuffed peppers too. They were a big hit in my house!

ViolaCrayola · 01/01/2012 19:02

We love the pregnant pasta. Highly recommended - the fennel seeds make it.
Jerk chicken was a bit underwhelming. Chicken pie is lovely. We haven't got that far in trying all the recipes as they take WAY longer than 30 mins (for us) and we are very busy!
The 20min meal phone app is better IMO.

ShesAStar · 04/01/2012 16:34

Another vote for the pregnant pasta, made it for friends a few months ago and everyone wanted the recipe!

MarsLady · 04/01/2012 16:48

As someone who has eaten jerk chicken my entire life, and despite the fact that he calls it rice and BEANS (grrrrrr)... the jerk chicken is divine!!!!!!!

Loved the pizza too. So am now prepared to do more of the recipes. (Oh and my chef friend tasted the jerk sauce - I cooked it for 17 - and he LOVED it!). Grin

Clayhead · 04/01/2012 16:50

I love the jerk chicken too - it's one of our most made recipes!

suburbandream · 04/01/2012 16:52

The only recipe I've tried so far is the mustard chicken. It's gorgeous and really easy. I'd do them all but I have v.fussy DCs!!

ednurse · 04/01/2012 16:55

Piri piri chicken and pregnant pasta!!
