I want to try the ham in coke thing, but will I be okay to do it in the slow cooker?
Do I use cherry coke and an onion? Do I have to seal the gammon first? And help with glaze too please.

Thank you Xmas Smile

I can only help with some of your questions. Slowcooker is absolutely fine! Its where i always do mine. I dont bother to seal it first. Never tried cherry coke cos its just the most disgusting drink, ever so dont know if it would work!

Good luck!

Thank you, I've just read that cherry coke's really nice. I might stick to normal coke then. Can I over cook it in the slow cooker?

I've never managed to overcook mine. Put it in before work and its done when i get home, unless you are planning on going away for a weekend and leaving it simmering away, I am sure it will be fine!

Anyone know if the cloves are really important? Dh hates them, so I was going to leave them out.

Never use them. Hate them here, too! Grin

The ham in this house is a clove free zone too......bleurgh......remind me of toothacheXmas Grin

Cherry coke is nice, someone on here recommended Dr Pepper. Mines in normal coke as that's what I have. You can't overcook it in a slow cooker, it will just be lovely and tender.

Thank you, think I'm all sorted, have cherry coke, onions, cherry jam and smoked paprika for the glaze, slight panic as the gammon didn't actually arrive with my shopping this morning, but I've managed to get one now Xmas Smile
Now just got to try not to ruin it! I've got a turkey crown too, do I'm hedging my bets with two meats Xmas Grin

So sorry to jump in here but are you doing the glaze? Or just cooking in coke & Onion? Do I need to glaze?

BelinaTheTurkey · 24/12/2011 00:59

Ooh, I have a ham for boxing day, and about 200 litres of flat coke as DH seems to be incapable o finishing one bottle before opening another. Can someone link the recipe for me please?

JollyJinglyJoo · 24/12/2011 01:02

I found a recipe in this month's "delicious" mag, but haven't read it yet!!. You can no doubt get it online at the good food website (bbcgoodfood.co.uk)

Santasjollys · 24/12/2011 12:02

I'm rubbish at links, just google nigellas recipe. It's roughly chopped onions, lots of coke, and leave for hours.
Glaze can be what you want really, maple syrup and mustard seems popular. I'm doing cherry jam and smoked paprika Xmas Smile

Are you bunging it in your slow cooker then? I have a massive ham to cook and thought i might put cider in with it on low in SC.

What do you do for the glaze then? Wap it on and oven it? For how long please?

[no frickin idea why i agreed to this]

Xmas Grin
Santasjollys · 24/12/2011 22:15

I'm doing mine in the slow cooker, then putting the glaze on and putting it in the oven, I've read anything from 15-30 mins Xmas Smile
