Making soup look posh!?!

Hi all,
I've made a leek and potato soup and it's quite tasty but it doesn't look great, we're having friends for dinner this weekend and wondered if you had any ideas of things to add/drizzle on top etc to make it look better, more fancy.
I don't usually do a started, normally just main and pud but I might serve the soup if I can make it look better
Thanks

Sorry that should be 'I don't normally serve a starter'

deep fry parsley or basil leaves....be careful they spit!

spoon on cream in a spiral and drag a knife point through it to make a cobweb effect

or drizzle it from side to side, knife down the centre and it will make heart shapes.

Parmesan cheese

Or you could drop and egg into the bottom of each bowl - the hot soup will poach it.

Croutons might make it look a bit more exciting

Or little fried bacon bits

oooh parmesan crisps are lovely to go with!

just grate it finely, and using a pastry cutter to keep it tidy, put small even piles onto a baking tray

you need quite a hot oven and you have to watch them like a hawk but you can easily do it in advance and keep them in an airtight tin.

You could shape them like brandy snaps if you could be arsed wanted.

Wow thanks those ideas are great. I don't know which to pick. Am thinking of serving lots of little bowls now to get 1 of each topping!

Blob fresh cream swirled just before serving looks great on leak and potato soup.

bruffin · 16/12/2011 17:45

Walnut oil drizzled on top

Probably a daft question but do you serve the Parmesan crisps on top of the soup or on the side (didn't know of they went super soggy the second they touch the soup?)

Fried leek slices

Basil oil (olive oil and basil whizzed up) looks nice on top of soups ... And is lovely to dip accompanying bread into?

Swirl of cream and a sprig of parsley. Quick and easy
