Trifle - what to put in it!

Hi, I'm making a cherry trifle, or am supposed to be but can't find cherry jelly so will have raspberry instead with tinned cherries in. My DH loves them and thinks it will be fab [slightly scared].

Does anyone have any idea of what else could go in it? Was going to shove in some sponge fingers, custard and cream on top with fresh cherries and choc flakes.

Any other ideas?

Nigella Lawson has a recipe a lovely chocolate and cherry one. Kirsch, chocolate cake sandwiched with cherry jam, tinned cherries and a chocolate custard..

Thanks, that's really helped!

I've made a nice one with cherry panettone, cherry compote, cherries in Kirsch, custard and some fresh cherries to decorate.

Maraschino cherries are fantastic in trifle. Drizzle the juice over the trifle sponges too, it's delicious.

No jelly!

Why no jelly?

The dcs love jelly so can't possibly leave it out. Where can you get the maraschino cherries? I am doing my shopping online and can't find them (sainsburys).

I get mine from Sainsbury's, in the shop they're next to the pickled onions, not sure why!

The best trifles don't contain jelly.

GlueSticksEverywhere · 15/12/2011 21:12

Hmm they don't have them online.

The best trifles don't contain jelly.

Ah but the happiest childrens bellies do! (my dcs anyway!)

our tesco used to keep the maraschinos cherries with the condiments over the freezers till they when to the big tall ones

it was horseradish, mustard, tartare sauce, beetroot, pickled cabbage, pickled onions, the teeny silverskin onions and then the cherries!

sometimes they have them in the drinks aisle with the sliced lemons in jars. for folks too lazy to slice a lemon

GlueSticksEverywhere · 15/12/2011 21:25

Ta. Will have to go and look.

Are they in a jar or packet? Found some online whch are just called dark sweet cherries (packet) and it says they can be used in black forest gateau. They also have Opies cherries in a jar but it doesn't say what they are for.

Opies are the ones you want. In a jar. Usually used for cocktails. I tip a whole jar, juice and all, into my trifle. Makes the trifle sponges lovely and soggy!

GlueSticksEverywhere · 15/12/2011 21:59

Oh shit just ordered the other one's. Back to amend the order again! Grin
