My 14 year old SIL has always been like this.

It's unusual but normal

WigWamBam · 08/01/2006 19:33

Think yourself lucky that she will drink water. It's much healthier, and many of us would kill to have children who preferred water to juice.

Twiglett · 08/01/2006 19:33

a 6.5 year old? or month old?

don't see what the problem is .. why would you want to give juice if its a baby and happy with water?

mummytosteven · 08/01/2006 19:33

unusual but very healthy!

Aloha · 08/01/2006 19:33

of course it is normal. i don't want to sound rude and i don't mean to be but why are you concerned?

biglips · 08/01/2006 19:38

twiglett - sorry its 6.5 yrs old as she used to drink juices but now prefer water which i found it unusual!

If she prefers water then make the most of it and give her water! It's not a choice that's going to do her any harm, when all said and done, and we all have our own preferences when it comes to what we like. Hers just happen to be healthier than some other choices, that's all.

Lonelymum · 08/01/2006 19:53

My 8 yo ds only drinks water or milk. recently, he will sometimes be persuaded to have a bit of pineapple juice diluted with water, but mainly it is just water or milk only. It isn't so much a problem when out as you can buy bottled water, but it is a pain at parties when often only squash or fizzy drinks are available.

Miaou · 08/01/2006 19:54

My 7 and 8 year olds will only drink water. Occasionally milk if offered, and dd1 will have the odd glass of juice, but certainly water by choice. They both hate fizzy drinks. They ask for a bottle of water and a straw in cafes and view it as a treat!!

Marina · 08/01/2006 19:55

ds is the same age, has always drunk water and milk as well as dilute fruit juices, but has also lately often asked for water specifically. Maybe its a tastebud maturation thing at this age Biglips

I prefer water to all other drinks - have a glass on the go now. People try to fancy it up with ice (fine) and lemon (barf) for me, but I just like it - always have done. I used to get offered orange or lemon squash at parties when I was little (often made from powder - double treble barf) and I'd always ask for water. People probably thought I was odd then.

Not sure that this is a resounding recommendation that it's normal, but it's the most thirst-quenching drink there is and it's good for her - don't worry about it!

MarsLady · 08/01/2006 20:02

I think it's wonderful. Do her teeth the world of good and also fab for her body... no rubbish getting in that way lol.

i would say perfectly normal, both of my 2 have gone through phases of only drinking water, and now ds1 (8) will drink water, milk and apple juice (also loves coke but only allowed it on special occassions such as dinner out or parties) and ds2 likes to drink, water or milk, will drink juice if no other alternative but prefers milk or water and a piece of fruit.

my friend from school is 29 years old and has only ever drunk water since the age of 4, she has drunk nothing else! no fruit juice, no fizzy, and certianly no alcohol! she seems perfectly normal to me

cutekids · 08/01/2006 20:10

my 3 little uns drink water all the time- although my mum and friends will always offer them coke etc. and they take it quite happily-!When a doctor saw them all reaching for their cups one time he couldn't believe it and i've tried to stick with this one all the way cos I really like to think it's good for them. Unfortunately, they hate anything else that's particularly good for them----all LOVE chicken nuggets; macdonalds etc. so I think it's my way of getting something "good" into them!

biglips · 08/01/2006 20:13

im not worried giving her water as i just find it unusual that she seems to knock back flavours/ juices... and yes she is in good health too

I think it's brilliant. DD mainly drinks water although will occasionally ask for coca cola, lemonade or juice.

My cousin drinks only water or beer She has lovely skin and beautiful teeth (totally unstained by tea/coffee/red wine).

hunkermunker · 08/01/2006 20:21

DS only drinks water too - loads of the stuff.

But fizzy water - double barf with big flashy bits on!

tegan · 08/01/2006 20:39

My dd1 is the same at 7.9 yrs she hardly ever drinks anything else.

elastamum · 08/01/2006 20:46

My DS2 only drinks water, he dosnt like juice etc. When thay wre both babies thay only had milk or water and he never developed a taste for anything else. DS1 will drink coke etc but the rule at home is water milk or fruit juice

my 5 year charge will only drink water (and milk before bed)

Its nothing to worry about.... much better for their teeth. You dont need all the sugar and crap they put in sqauashes / juice "drinks" and as long as you eat enough fruit and veg in the day anyway you dont need pure juices either!
