We've been getting quite a lot of sprouts in our veg box. Now, I don't mind sprouts, but I wouldn't base a meal around them. Until now...

Sprout Gratin:
Parboil sprouts.
Make crispy bacon bits.
Mix sprouts, bacon, chestnuts and cream.
Cover with crumbs, and bake for 15 min til golden.

Oh my goodness, yummy. I use a bag of sprouts, a few rashers of streaky, a small tub of cream and a pack of the pre cooked chestnuts. So easy.

But what else can I do with them? Any other great sprout suggestions?

Shred and quickly fry with chilli, garlic - maybe some toasted pine nuts, EVOO and toss in some cooked pasta & parmesan.

sprout pesto

blend cooked sprouts with lemon rind, one small clove garlic, olive oil, pine nuts and grated cheese and a bit of chilli if you like that sort of thing. can be blended to a puree but i prefer it with a coarser texture. big yum.

I roast them with a coating of honey and Dijon mustard until slightly blackened. Yum.

I'm sorry SeasonsGripings, I'm sure your combination of sprouts, chilli and garlic is lovely but it reminds me of an exchange in the Rik Mayall, Ade Edmonson series 'Bottom'. 'Sprouts Mexicane' Grin. Since passed into the Cog household lexicon as shorthand for any dish guaranteed to make you fart.

Richie: I've got just got to finish off my Sprouts Mexicane and we're all set.
Eddie: Sprouts Mexicane?
Richie: (Proudly) Sproutes Mexicane!
Eddie: What's that?
Richie: Well it's... sprouts, pinch of chili powder, jar of curry powder, hint of tobasco sauce - well, three bottles actually. Not so much a hint, more a Party Political Broadcast. And the secret ingredient: gunpowder!
Eddie: ...Sprouts?
Richie: Yeah, they were left over from Christmas.
Eddie: But it's October!
Richie: Yeah, they were a bit... frisky. But the spices'll cover any embarassment.

I saw someone mention a Sprout Curry recently, sounded fab. I desperately want Sprouts Gratin now. I could make it tomorrow - DH would wolf it down, except that it contains sprouts. And chestnuts. Hmm

Sprout curry you say? - try a Sprout Thoran - google cabbage thoran and substitute. It's a dry curry with coconut, mustard seeds, curry leaves and chilli.

Lightly boiled sprouts finished in frying chorizo (chopped) with chestnuts is meant to be rather good.

To go right back to basics; If you buy yr sprouts on the STALK they are a revelation like tiny crunchy fresh cabbages.

Mine are keeping fresh outside in a vase of water like flowers.I GUARANTEE no sulphurous fart making green balls Really really REALLY Xmas Grin and i don't work for the sprout marketing board !!!!!
