Marzipan alternative for nut allergy?

Hi, my nephews have nut allergy so can't put marzipan on Christmas cake. Do I just put icing straight on, or is there something else I can do to make it smoother and also stop drying out. If icing straight on, which is best?

I love my nephews, but really, no marzipan? It's the best bit of Christmas < resigned face, sighing >

Thanks

I haven't tried this and I'm not sure how it would taste but you could try this:

Oftengrumpy - thank you. Will try end this week (got few days "off" at work now!) and report back here in case you/others interested.
Open to other suggestions too, still.

If you use fondant icing it can go straight on cake

I have put fondant straight on the cake - worked fine.
