Soup starter for Christmas dinner??

I'm thinking of doing a soup for starter this year, as I'm pregnant so can't have prawns, and can't be doing with all the faffing for not much end product! But, the only soup I have ever done before is pea and ham, and I don't know if that a Christmas day kind of soup?!

I was thinking tomotoey/ sweet red pepper? Something veggie based, due to the onslaught of meat that will be the main dinner. I have a slow cooker, so ideally I will be something I can throw in there first thing in the morning, and then just laddle out at about 2pm.

Does anyone have any suggestions?? TIA.

How about watercress or a roasted tomato and basil one. Both very easy, light and can be made now and shoved in the freezer.

Yes, light is definitely the key I think. Roasted tomato might be the route to go down, thanks.

I have done beetroot soup for Christmas. It looks good because it is a lovely rich colour, a swirl of sour cream is a reference to (supposed) snowy conditions, and if you like, you can add spices such as nutmeg for yet more Christmasiness.

Bacon and chestnut soup is lovely and if you use a can of unsweetened, chestnut puree it's minimum effort. Need to jazz up the presentation with a nice creme fraiche swirl and some artfully chopped chives as it is coffee brown in colour. But chestnuts super seasonal.

Great thank you, loving the themed soup. May have to test drive some of these before The Big Day!

We did a lovely roasted parsnip and apple soup a few years ago. Very nice.

Mmmmm. I'm going to do the beetroot soup. Thanks for the tip Thistledew. I think kids like the ol' beetroot soup too.
