Is there anything more disgusting than this?

tis better than no icing at all IMO!

i have 2 milk intolerant kids so we have little choice unfortunately

CMOTdibbler · 19/11/2011 18:05

I think its fine if you add flavourings.

nikon1968 · 19/11/2011 18:07

Believe me it is not..........................I spat it out I would rather have a plain muffin.

Isn't the whole point that butter icing is made with butter? Were you paying good money for this nikon?

silverfrog · 19/11/2011 18:37

we made some very successful chocolate 'buttercream' icing a couple of weeks ago, using Pure spread and cocoa (probably a bit of icing sugar too).

was bloody lovely, tbh. a bit soft and runny, but then it was made in a kitchen next ot an AGA, then devoured immediately, rather than left to set somewhere cool, so can't hold that against it.

was fab, and actually, imo (and I am not dairy intolerant) nicer than proper buttercream as not as rich.

thisisyesterday: cow milk intolerant? If so, you can get goat butter (non-goaty flavour) in Waitrose. Buffalo milk is also a non-cow alternative, though I haven't seen any butter. You can get buffalo ice-cream which is a fab and healthy option to cow.

HerdOfTinyElephants · 19/11/2011 19:16

With just marg is icky. But some of the nicest buttercream icing I've had used 1/2 butter, 1/4 marg and 1/4 vegetable shortening.

silverfrog · 19/11/2011 19:17

buffalo milk (and yoghurt and icecream) are indeed lovely.

goat's butter also available in Sainsbury's too. and goat cream (also v non-goaty)

you can also, I believe, make icecream using oatly cream, but haven't investigated this fully, as dd1 also gluten intolerant, so no good for her.

they can';t tolerate goat's milk either.,
and neither would touch the buffalo milk i got from waitrose, although i can't blame them as the taste is very, very strong

we've had some success with sheep's milk yoghurt, but not cheese or milk!

gah

but they're happy with marg in icing for the time being thankfully

boogiewoogie · 19/11/2011 20:08

Don't do it! It goes sllimy! Better glace than that!

trixymalixy · 19/11/2011 20:13

dS is allergic to dairy, I always make the "butter" icing with pure spread and it tastes perfectly fine.

LordOfTheFlies · 22/11/2011 20:05

I don't like the taste of 'uncooked butter' ie. not on toast or sarnies but okay in cheese sauce or a rich cake.

So I used marg in icing and couldn't get it soft and fluffy.
So for me it has to be glace, royal or that Betty Crocker in a tub stuff.
