Quantities for 9 inch cake tin?

I am making a birthday cake for my daughter and have a 9 inch cake tin. I only have the one, so wanted to make a cake and cut it in two.

Can anybody help with the quantities please? I am just making a basic chocolate sponge.

Thanks.

I make a 5 egg mix for two 9" sandwich tins ,maybe you should do a 4 egg mix if your tin is not very deep. A five egg cake is an awful lot of cake ,does 15 or more people.

Are you talking round, or square? If round, it should be OK to use the 5 egg mix so long as it is at least 3" deep.

Thanks both.

I could cry! It isn't cooked at the bottom in the middle and is squidgy. What can I do I don't want to poison anyone and don't have enough butter to make another cake.

Not having a good day and this is going to push me over the edge.

I hate cooking. I am rubbish at it :(

This is a brilliant website and I have a couple of her books.

Believe me for every good cake, I make a couple of rubbish, you just have to get over it, chop up the edible bits, pop in freezer for the base of a trifle.

23cm is a large round cake - 20cm square. I would recomend this cake, I marbled mine with white chocolate. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4689/chocolate-cake

Sounds like yours is undercooked. You can buy butter from any corner shop so have another go. This recipe is excellent.

Possibly too late but there are loads of recipes that use oil not butter in cakes. I made Nigella's courgette cake yesterday (mn recipe) and that had no butter, just oil.
