of course!

fur and fizzing aside! chuck it out if either of those apply.

talkingnonsense · 13/11/2011 14:12

If it smells ok, use it.

hellhasnofury · 13/11/2011 14:13

It wouldn't have a 'best before' date on it a few years ago so you would've had to rely on the 'fur and fizzing' rule. I'd use it.

Clayhead · 13/11/2011 14:13

I would if it smelt OK

TheFoosa · 13/11/2011 14:13

dd has tasted it and declared it 'fine to use' Hmm

I had the same dilemma and came to the same conclusion- of course if you turn out to be very ill as a result do let us know and I can rethink my Christmas cake options!

debka · 13/11/2011 20:06

My tin of treacle has a dire warning NOT TO USE AFTER USE BY DATE.

How did they know I was going to buy it? Wink

Crevix · 13/11/2011 20:09

it's not the poisoning risk but the explosion one.

apparently if you ignor a tin of tracl for years ut ca ngo kaboom.

i have a special 6 year old one waiting for just such an event.

debka · 13/11/2011 20:34

How exciting!

tallwivglasses · 13/11/2011 20:48

Is it just me, or is the food topic the most exciting thing on MN at the moment?

There's danger, conflict, suspense, explosions ffs...and that's just on this thread Shock

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 13/11/2011 20:54

I have had a 'Kaboom' situation with black treacle: still used it (scummy trollope)

loubielou31 · 13/11/2011 21:02

Is there anything in Treacle to go off? I have a very old half jar of molasses in the cupboard and was wondering the same thing. Why does it explode?

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 13/11/2011 21:08

Mine was 3 years past sell by date and went POP loudly, but it wasn't exactly a kaboom/explosion. The ginger biscuits we made were yummy though.

scaevola · 13/11/2011 21:13

The only thing that's likely to have gone wrong with treacle is that some of the sugar may have crystallised, thus affecting the texture. But that probably won't make a difference to the finished product, especially if the recipe involves heating (as the crystals will melt again).

hellhasnofury · 13/11/2011 21:32

. I wonder how many years it takes to get to that stage.

TheFoosa · 13/11/2011 22:41

We used as we couldn't be arsed to go out and get another tin

The cinnamon was 2 years out of date too

We are currently still alive so fingers crossed for an uneventful night

Have put treacle pot in an old roses tin so hopefully kaboom moment will ensue Grin

2012... Just opened, looks fine, no drama with the can turning into an IED but... Is it safe?
