Custard for a 1 year old?

Can I just use Bird's? DM says no, but I don't know if she has a point or not. I know it's not ideal, but it'd only be occasionally.

If not, what kind of custard can I make/buy for a toddler please?

It's what we use, although we don't add any sugar, which MIL thinks is cruel, but it doesn't stop DD1 scoffing it by the bucketload!
