Which 5 meals do you cook most often?

MrsHuxtable · 05/11/2011 14:29

Please indulge me. Been sick with hyperemesis for the last 5 months, so the thought of food was pushed to the very back of my mind. I'm now ready to look at cookbooks again. It's bliss! In fact, I'm a little obsessed at the moment with all the things I want to eat...

So what are the 5 meals you make the most often?

And also, how many different meals are there roughly in your repertoire that you rotate for dinner?

The two things I seem to cook all the time at the moment (following a "must use my cookbooks more" phase) are:

Nigellas spring chicken and Gordon Ramseys chorizo, chickpea and prawn stew.

They are both one pot dishes and despite the recipes suggesting they are quick (which they can be) taste better the longer you leave them stewing away so perfect to make in advance.

Other than those it's chilli, steak and salad and seafood pasta here.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 06/11/2011 06:53

I rarely do the same meals one week to another. Every Sunday, I go through my bookmarked recipes & try at least 3 new meals, plus 4 from a huge list of tried & tested. I think I probably do a roast chicken every 2/3 weeks, so thats probably my most used meal.

EttiKetti · 06/11/2011 07:09

Roast
Spaghetti Carbonara
Chicken breast stuffed with pesto/sundried tomatoes/cheese wrapped in bacon
chicken legs with tomatoes
Some minced beef meal...Bolognaise, cottage pie, chilli, lasagne

bebeballroom · 06/11/2011 07:33

Not sure how many recipes I have in my repertoire, or how often I rotate them really. I do know that I tend to get into a rut of cooking the same things over & over, week in week out & then have to give myself a giant kick up the bum to do different things.

Current favourites here are:
Chilli (either with rice or jacket potatoes) sometimes bean chilli instead of meat.
Macaroni Cheese with smoked sausage
Beef stew & dumplings
Corned Beef Hash (perfect autumn food, cheap, warming & easy!)
Cream cheese stuffed chicken breasts with roast potatoes & veg.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 06/11/2011 07:59

Spag bol
Sausage and veg
Risotto
Fajitas
Roast chicken

Had forgotten about toad in the hole. Must make more now getting colder...

ballstoit · 06/11/2011 08:09

Spaghetti Carbonara
Spag Bol
Sausage and Mash
Jacket Spuds, Mackerel or Pilchards and Salad
Pizza

Recently I wrote out all the dishes I can do without consulting a book (in the hope of varying the menu a little more, unsuccessfully) and there were about 50. We eat about 10 of them regularly, I have no motivation at the moment.

DumSpiroSpero · 06/11/2011 08:21

Chicken Curry
Pizza & Salad/Jackets
Steak Pie
Roast dinner
Pork stir fry with cashews and hoi sin sauce

They are the things that all of us will eat so tend to crop up the most often!

Beaverfeaver · 06/11/2011 08:31

Chili
Japanese chili noodles
Pasta (with whatever is in the fridge)
Fahitas
Marinated chicken / veg

valleyqueen · 06/11/2011 08:49

Chilli
Pasta with prawns in garlic sauce
Sausage, mash and onions
Moroccan chicken with cous cous
Toad in the hole

Yorky · 06/11/2011 09:07

Anything with pasta always popular - my fabourite atm seems to be with bacon, leeks and courgettes with boursin melted on as the sauce
Cottage/shepherds pie
Curry and rice or sweet/sour with noodles (sorry sauce from jar Blush) with lots of veg
Sunday roast is getting more usual, never used to but now the kids love anything with gravy
Sausage and mash or fish fingers and potato wedges features once a week

I reckon I probably rotate about 20 meals that I can do without thinking, if you count pasta with different kinds on sauce (are spag bol and lasagne so different?), every so often DH will make a sarcastic comment about the number of recipe books I own

Doilooklikeatourist · 06/11/2011 09:19

Roast pork (most Sundays )
Spag Bol
Sausage and mash
Pot roast chicken
Macaroni cheese

AgathaPinchBottom · 06/11/2011 10:26

A typical week:

Spaghetti Bolognaise
Roast chicken and veg
Cottage/shepherds pie
Cauliflower cheese
Pasta with leek, ham, peas, cream & parmesan
Roast leg of lamb with flageolet beans and bread & butter
Chicken casserole
Lancashire hotpot

PintOfStellaAndBuckfastChaser · 06/11/2011 10:31

DS is really fussy, so I often have to cook different meals!

We all eat:
Roast Chicken, tatties and veg
Pork chops, chips and veg
Chicken Curry
Gammon and Pineapple with chips
Mince and tatties (I'm sick of it though!)
Pasta with tomato sauce
Sausages, beans and chips
Pasta, tuna and mayo
Roast beef (at my mums on a Sunday)
And last but not least....... Spag Bol Grin

DP and myself:
Fish Pie
Corned beef hash
Chilli
Mushroom risotto
spicy pork and rice hot pot

When we have the above, DS has:
Chicken Dippers and chips
Burgers and chips
Hot dogs and chips
Pizza
Meatballs and pasta (he'll only eat meatballs in gravy, out of a tin Hmm

InmaculadaConcepcion · 06/11/2011 12:04

Pasta with tomato and quinoa/red lentil sauce (OK, veggie version of Spag Bol with different shaped pasta...!) or with roast veg, halloumi and pesto
Home made soup (various types) with cheese on toast
Stir-fry veg tofu/quorn/halloumi with noodles
Veg sausage and broccoli and potato mash
Spanish omelette/frittata

I probably only have about ten meals on rotation at the moment, but am trying to increase variety by trying something new every week.

Good to see what everyone else is doing (and nick some of those quick meal ideas...)

babycarmen · 06/11/2011 12:04

Roast chicken
Lasagne
Chicken fajitas
Curry
Fish and chips

But since ive been pregnant and DP is working 10am-9pm most days were really only having one or two proper family meals each week which is rubbish. I just make mini portions of things for DD like mac n cheese or spag bol.

SeriousWispaHabit · 06/11/2011 12:36

Spaghetti bolognese

Chicken and chorizo rice thing
Moroccan chicken tagine
Sausage pasta (the Jamie o one)

Carbonara
Pasta arabiata
Thai chicken noodles
Cottage pie

They are all cooked equally regularly. I probably also try something new most weeks. However - I really love cooking and spending time in the kitchen so don't mind the effort. I have also delegated all other domestic tasks (cleaning, ironing, shopping, paying bills) to either dh or have someone to do them Blush
If I had to do all the other stuff we would eat beans on toast and oven chips with turkey twizzlers and take a multivitamin Grin
