Is there anywhere you can borrow/hire number cake tins from?

Yes, a shop I know charges £2 per 24 hours for cake tin hire, and it is just a local cake shop. I'd google cake shops near you, and phone and ask them.

You can also buy them on ebay and then sell it again afterwards?

its to make a birthday cake for my friends DS 1st birthday but I'm thinking it might be worth buying as about 20 of us all have babies about the same age.

Look here, here and here

I think I'd still hire one for £2 if you can find somewhere similar, but sure it would be easily sold on.

Lots of local kitchen shops hire out tins.

Can't you just cut a normal cake into the correct shape?
