having the family round for DS's birthday on Sunday. Would like to make some nibbles - any suggestions for simple but yummy canapés? Seem to have a mental block and can't think. Searching recipe books and getting more confused. BIL a bit of a food snob too, which doesn't help. TIA

If you search 'canapes' on BBC Good Food there are lots of lovely suggestions. I know this as I spent an hour last night looking at them planning Christmas :)

Blinis with creme fraiche and smoked salmon
Mini mozzarella balls marinated in something poncy wrapped in Parma ham
Mini yorkshires with roast beef and horseradish
Dates stuffed with stilton and wrapped in Parma ham

Get a roll of jus roll puf pastry. Cut into small squares. On each put a blob of pesto, a piece of goat cheese (buy one circle of Chevre blanc) and a Luce if cherry tomato. Put in oven for about 20 mins until they look cooked. Quite easy and always seems to impress.

Also second blinis. I think the packets of mini ones are the best.

Cook green beans, cool under tap, make bundles of 3 beans and roll small ragged piece Parma ham around middle of each bunch. Dip each bunch in balsamic briefly.

Sorry should say "piece of" cherry tomato!

Titan thanks, like the puff pastry idea! Suppose you could vary the cheese, maybe used caramelised onions etc?

Definitely could vary the toppings. Caramelised onions sound nice. I would probably use ones from a jar to minimise effort!
