HOW is it possible to use one without hot soup being spattered over my kitchen (and me). There must be a technique surely...?

Keep it under the surface of the soup. You may have to tip the pan.

OLKN has it. Tip the soup so that there is enough depth for the business end of the blender... or transfer the pan contents to the tall container many of them come with and blend in there.

and don't turn it on until the blade is submerged!

Or drape a tea towel over the top of the pan leaving a gap for the blender, stops the splashes.

If in doubt, use a smaller saucepan so the soup is deeper.
