sugar in yoghurt??

kateandfelicity · 19/12/2005 11:48

DP has been concerned about giving DD petits filous as he says there is lots of sugar in it?
is this true? is this bad? if so, is there any alternative around that is suitable for a 7mo?
don't want to stop giving her yoghurt as her milk intake is not always very good and want her to have it for calcium and fat etc, plus dd loves it!

thanks

Kate

Petits filou does contain a lot of sugar, and from memory it's also got flavourings and colourings in it - I didn't use it for my dd at all because I didn't like all the crap it had in it. I used plain organic yoghurt mixed with puree, which always went down well.

nailpolish · 19/12/2005 11:51

you need some sugar in your diet - your body couldnt survive without sugar, and there are worse yoghurts you can have that petit filou, im sure

my 2 lived on petit filou and still do

WigWamBam · 19/12/2005 11:51

Mixed with fruit puree, I mean.

nailpolish · 19/12/2005 11:52

wwb wise as ever!

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 19/12/2005 11:52

Natural yoghurt is just as good, like NP said. Mix it with fresh fruit.

Another alternative is the Yeo Valey yoghurts. They're pretty good.

SackAche · 19/12/2005 11:53

WWB - It states on the packaging that there are no artificial colours etc. And the sugar is 'fruit' sugar. Not terrible!

WigWamBam · 19/12/2005 11:54

Maybe it's changed in the last four years; the colourings in it were certainly not natural when I was weaning dd. Apologies if my information is out of date ... but I still think that natural yoghurt with fruit in it is healthier and less processed than commercial baby yoghurts.

It's a damned sight cheaper, too!

bamboo · 19/12/2005 11:55

I don't think Petit Filou taste that great - a bit too artificial - so didn't give it DD. I give her Yeo Organic ones but they are still pretty sugary - but natural sugars, I guess. New Year resolution to be as organised as WWB and do my own .

wewishyouamerryKITTYmas · 19/12/2005 11:57

I don't like Petit Filous either especially the new strawberry ones that are a horrendous bright pink colour, not too impressed with the ingredients list either.

I prefer Yeo Valley or Rachels Organics which are yoghurt and puree only or natural yoghurt mixed withs ome fruit puree.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 19/12/2005 12:00

petit filou aren't yoghurt, they are fromage frais. they are quite high in sugar. my ds2 is allergic to yoghurt (makes him vomit, how strange is that) so we have them as a yoghurt substitute sort of thing, but I agree that organic yoghurts (like yeo valley) are better.

at 7 mths she will probably love plain greek yoghurt - thicker and not so bitter as the non-greek natural yoghurts imo

hana · 19/12/2005 12:17

my dds have greek yogurt as well and I mix in mashed fruit or berries for them. They are 4 and 11 months

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 19/12/2005 12:37

Just plain banana mashed with natural yogurt is nice, or soft fruit such as peaches whizzed in the blender.

SackAche · 19/12/2005 12:42

Here's all you need to know about the fat and sugar in all brands available in the UK!

Yoghurts Info

It says Petite Filous is high in both fat and sugar.

kateandfelicity · 19/12/2005 12:43

i gave dd a yeo valley one last night... maybe dp thinks any kind of sugar is bad... but if it comes from the fruit then, surely its ok???
maybe its because petits filous was all i craved while pregnant!!! this could also account for how i became the size of a house!!!

Fruit sugar (fructose) is still a processed sugar and not particularly healthy, unless eaten with the rest of the fruit and all the fibre that goes with it and slows down the absorbtion into your bloodstream.

High sugar yogurts also help to give children a sweet tooth, best avoided.

WigWamBam · 19/12/2005 12:58

The nutrition information on Petit Filous fromage frais and yoghurts is here ... and they definitely do contain added sugar (not just the fructose from the fruit) and colourings. The list of ingredients in both the yoghurt and the fromage frais is huge, and it includes sugar in the form of sugar, fructose and glucose, so it really is high in sugar.

SackAche · 19/12/2005 13:01

WWB - Yeah, but its natural colourings from Beetroot!!! Surely its only 'artificial' ones that are not good?????

WigWamBam · 19/12/2005 13:02

I meant to type flavourings, not colourings . They're not natural.

louloubelle · 19/12/2005 13:43

Hi...apart from the Yeo Valley plain or Greek yoghurt, either on its own or mixed with fruit, the only other fruity childs' yoghurt flavoured naturally, ie with fruit juice not sugar/sweetener that I have found is the Rachel's Little Yoghurts. Even those fruit Tumble things have sugar added.

imation · 19/12/2005 13:48

imho, Petits Filous is crap just reading this

Flavourings, Modified Maize Starch, Stabilisers: Pectin, Guar Gum, Locust Bean Gum, Xanthan Gum; Acidity Regulator: Lactic Acid.

make u feel
i give my ds plain yorgut and some mixed fruit which he likes a lot.

SackAche · 19/12/2005 13:55

imation - Doesn't make me feel . Do you actually know what all those things are that you listed? Some of them are perfectly nartural!

Another, lazy way to have lower-sugar yogurt is to mix flavoured sweetened yogurt (e.g. the Yeo Valley ones or the Rachel ones) with plain yogurt. This is how I eat yogurt now, too. I think the Yeo Valley and Rachel yogurts don't have artificial colours or flavours (they do have added sugar), and this way you end up with a lower-sugar yogurt, too.

Epiffany · 19/12/2005 14:07

buy an easiyo yoghurt maker
I do buy yeo valley ones a lot and dd does love them, also they are thick enough for self feeding

Epiffany · 19/12/2005 14:08

NQC thats exactly what we do too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
