sugar in yoghurt??

kateandfelicity · 19/12/2005 11:48

DP has been concerned about giving DD petits filous as he says there is lots of sugar in it?
is this true? is this bad? if so, is there any alternative around that is suitable for a 7mo?
don't want to stop giving her yoghurt as her milk intake is not always very good and want her to have it for calcium and fat etc, plus dd loves it!

thanks

Kate

Seriously though, the point is that if children develop a taste for sugary, processed and thickened food (bleurghhh!) then that is what they will tend to go for thereafter.

Nothing wrong (once again) with a bit of crap every now and again, but if you have trained theirt palated to enjo relatively unprocessed food,it makes mealtimes more enjoyable nad you know they are getting the best.

Gosh, call me a prig, but I don't want my perfect beautiful precious children to be sullying themselves with crap,I really don't.

Feistybird · 19/12/2005 14:53

My SIL has tennagers and she is going through the scenario of them coming home for their Sunday dinner plainly not hungry, so picking round the edges of their plate - having had a McD's en route...

NannyL · 19/12/2005 17:16

rachels yogurts arent sweetened with sugar (but iwth concentrated apple juice) and the ingrediants are yogurt, fruit apple or pear juise and lemon juice.

Yeo valley / noddy organic yoghurts have sugar in but less than other non orgnaic brands. they also dont have crappy ingrediants

petiti filouse etc and are also full of other crappy ingrediants... starch etc.

I have yet to come across a baby who doenst like natural yoghurt with (or without) a cube of fruit puree added!

mums for yogurts are also only fruit and yogurt (organic as well)

NannyL · 19/12/2005 17:17

Oh and where i am 4 yeo valley yogurts cost LESS than 4 petit filoux 'big pots'

NotQuiteCockney · 19/12/2005 17:19

NannyL, only the Rachel's yogurts for kids have no added sugar. And they have organic apple juice concentrate, instead, in non-apple yogurts, which isn't that different from sugar, anyway.

But yeah, Rachel's and Yeo are better than loads of other brands.

wewishyouamerryKITTYmas · 19/12/2005 17:31

In my local supermarket you have the choice of Petit Filous or all the other kids yoghurts Danone from 4 months are full of crap as well, and the usual Munch Bunch, Winnie the Pooh combinations or plain natural yoghurt that is it.

Really annoys me you cannot find natural yoghurt flavoured with a bit of fruit puree nothing else. We either have Rachels/Yeo or DIY natural yoghurt and puree.

Epiffany · 19/12/2005 17:32

mums4 has no sugar as well
lemon juic is not great for baby enamel on teeth I was told, but folks who use fresh fruit use it to stop fruit discolouring
you cannot win can you?

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 19/12/2005 21:24

actually is it only me that thinks that Rachels is horrible stuff? I know it is organic etc etc but the actual yoghurt they use is thin and bitter and horrible. Yeo Valley - delicious, Rachel's - euch

or maybe that is just my palate

OnTheFlossDayOfChristmas · 19/12/2005 21:30

Racheals yoghurts have just been made thicker. I get them for DS, although he will also eat just plain yoghurt on its own, and, if I were organised enough, I could bung a bit of fruit puree in. However, I am not . They are a bit more expensive, but no more so really than a jar of pudding. And I really can't stand all the rubbish that is in petit filou. Such piddly pots!! I'm just a lazy mum really!

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 21:35

DS eats Yeo Valley natural yoghurt - he's very taken with the flower on the front of the natural one and squeaks if he gets an apricot one because there's no flower!

But he only has this preference because he watches far too much Fifi Flowertot, so am def not smug mum

The big pots last two helpings with DS, because he is a yoghurt fiend - think it's probably cheaper for us to buy the small pots.

I don't like Rachel's stuff much either, PPH (except the rice puddings for when I can't be arsed to make it myself). And petit filous have an unpleasant back taste to them and coat your tongue in an unpleasant fashion, I find. Do very occasionally buy the choc ones for me though as they remind me of French puddings from holidays when I was little

NannyL · 19/12/2005 22:04

Not quite cokney.... you are right and i was unclear!

I DID mean the rachels kids yogurts tho!

(oh and Rachesl greek organic yogurt with honey is soooo yummy for gorwn ups!)

NotQuiteCockney · 19/12/2005 22:35

PPH, the thing with Rachels is, they do non-fat yogurt. Which is gross. As are (nearly) all non-fat things. They also do regular yogurt, and greek-style yogurt, which is even higher fat. Yeo Valley yogurt is all around 3-4%, which is normalish.

But that's the lovely thing about mixing flavoured sweetened yogurt with plain yogurt. If I have yogurt with a lovely flavour but not enough fat, I mix it with plain Greek yogurt. And then it's fine.

moondog · 21/12/2005 17:32

Yup,low fat yoghurt is the work of the devil.Thin and mean and joyless.

jennifersofia · 23/12/2005 21:12

How sad is this - in the supermarket today I told my two that as it was Christmas, as a special treat they could have some of the little pots of tweenies yoghurt instead of the Yeo Valley natural that we always get (dessert here is the Y.Valley with a few drops of maple syrup in or a little St.Dalfour jam mixed in). They were very excited!

foxinsocks · 23/12/2005 21:18

I couldn't agree more - those Rachel's yoghurts (and the other ones beginning with mums) really taste foul. Sainsburys substituted those for the Yeo Valley and Noddy organic ones we normally get (the kids love those ones!) and I couldn't understand why they weren't eating them till I tasted them myself!

I'm sure there's a fair bit of sugar in yoghurt but sugar isn't necessarily the devil's work (other than to your teeth really) as long as it's in moderation.

Dd has taken a liking to those horrible Muller corner chocolate balls yoghurts - if you think Petit Filous are sweet, you should taste those!

foxinsocks · 23/12/2005 21:18

the other nice youghurts are the full fat Yeo Valley big pots - the blackcurrant pots are absolutely delicious.

NannyL · 24/12/2005 00:18

Oh yes..... yeo valley blackcurrent yogurt.... YUMMMMMM that is lovely!

bobbybobbobbingalong · 24/12/2005 00:29

The amount of packaging that goes into a petit filou concerns me more than the ingredient list.
