German Xmas Biscuits!

NotQuiteCockney · 17/12/2005 13:38

A German friend (ok, my only "knit hat!" German friend) gave me some lovely homemade German Xmas biscuits yesterday. They look like oatmeal biscuits, but aren't. I think they've got currants in them, and hazelnuts. (Maybe baking soda/powder? Maybe ground almonds?)

Any ideas, links to recipes? I will ask her for hers, but I'm probably too impatient.

You should ring her up and say "Tell me ze biscuit recipe!" in a tone that suggests she must not dither about it.

I've um, never been in a Lidl. There's one not far from us, but it just doesn't look ... nice?

I found recipes for the other sort of biscuit she gave me, vanilla crescents, on those pages, but not the one I've got. Maybe a family recipe, I will have to ask.

She is very helpful and all that, in her way. And they're lovely biscuits.

lidl is quite the scariest shopping experience - i live opposite one - the stickiest floor of any retailer i have ever known!! Can usually rely on there being a fight/someone being arrested/being sick/nicking something. But what a great shop. Anything that you would buy and enjoy whilst on holiday in france/italy/germany you get in lidl...fantastic parmesan, mozzerella, salami, parma ham, non salt butter, bio yoghurts, crisps, nuts, choccies, biccies, cakes.

Lidl's alright, s'long as you're picky (Aldi OTOH is lovely)- Lidl often has half price fruit and veg, and if you don't do Organic- well, a cabbage is a cabbage isn't it! They do the German stuff as well, so lovely hams etc.

NQC - get down to Lidl straight away!
Lower prices and better quality for straightforward continental food.
What you wont get is the twiddly posh ranges, speciallist food like goats milk, and 20 different sorts of the same product that you get in expensive UK supermarkets. What you will get is generally good quality, cheaper food, one sort of everything.

fit - thank you for the links. I am an enthusiastic consumer of Munich's finest cakes and biscuits, must at least take the recipes with me when I go!
