we havent been too unlucky. although one weekend sticks in my mind.
us - young workers no kids
invited to
them - urban folk moved to cuntry with small kids
we drive for HOURS to get a BOWL OF SOUP as tea.
then have to go to local village shitty beer fest in freezing tent.
then in the morning they let their kids wake us up " to get practice in"

THANKS

I do a lovely courgette & lemon pasta with creme fraiche & Greek yoghurt. Very yummy. It's an eat yourself slim one I think.

FIL was living in London for work and sharing a flat with a woman from China. She offered to cook me dinner when I stayed over - I thought it would be fine, as I like Chinese food. Except her favourite delicacy was those green eggs.

see here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_egg

I struggled, to be honest, as I don't even like normal eggs. There were two different types - stinky ones, and extra stinky ones. With noodles. The noodles were nice though.

I have had some disasters (butternut squash soup that you could hang wallpaper with?!) but my worst dinner party meal was with some friends who in the past have been excellent hosts. Don't know what they were thinking but the menu was:

Starter - creamy quiche with cream
Main - pasta in cream sauce
Dessert - creme brûlée

All would have been fine on their own but I have never felt so ill and I was rooting through cupboards for Gaviscon that night!

Saying that, I remember being invited for tea at a boyfriend's house when I was 18. Everything was strictly measured - for four people there were 8 potatoes, 8 pieces of broccoli, 12 pieces of carrot. Since then I have never knowingly under catered.

I recently went to a fancy schmancy $$$$$ winery restaurant for uber posho birthday meal out with in-laws.

As a starter I was served a tin of anchovies.

Yup a TIN OF OILY ANCHOVIES.

STILL IN THEIR TIN.

And nowt else.

Effing bloody poncy uptheirownarse chef thought it was somehow chic and modern.

I was out (fairly recently) with dp to an italian ( i say it was italian, think in reality it was about as italian as irn bru) where we were served olives with garlic cloves. Not pickled garlic cloves. Just plainold peeled garlic. It nearly took the face off me. I mentioned to the waiter and he gave me some patronising chat about 'that's how they have it in italyAngry

Also went to someone's house for dinner and got spag bol with no tomatoes i.e. Mince and pasta, with onions. Boooooaaaak

My sil ordered some kind of pasta in france which arrived with a raw egg on top. She went green and nearly boaked, but i ate it. Was actually pretty delicious.

A vegetarian friend of ours was served mash & baked beans at a dinner party once.

What do you call those under cooked eggs in gelatin, which look pretty, but aren't something you'd actually want to consume? Luckily the only time I've ever been served this I was very hungry.
ah just googled. Oeufs-en-Gelee

I made macaroni cheese for some friends when I was a student, but as we had run out of butter I used brandy butterBlush.
I was not aware of the amount of sugar they put in that stuff, and got some odd looks as people started to eat. I found it was best eaten with my eyes closed, as the cheese was quite mild so it tasted like a pudding, but opening my eyes broke the spell as it really looked like main course.
11 years later DH still teases me about itGrin!
