Please help - have to make purple icing for cakes for sister's wedding on saturday. Made with butter or cream cheese the icing is now GREEN! So I tried just water icing, but that is grey coloured...
I have red and blue food colouring - why won't it go the right colour??

I use sugarcraft grape which gives you a purple colour.
How purple do you want it to be? I have found that the darker you go with the buttercream icing the more stranger taste you get

i have no idea, i thought red and blue made purple too. hope you get the answer!

Debs75 · 08/09/2011 11:19

Just a thought if you are using butter then you are mixing red, blue and yellow which is why the green result. The colours I use have a white so theoretically you would mix the white in then add the red and blue

might be too late now, but a bright purple needs more red than blue.....

I have rarely got this to work and as a result have a shelf full of single colours I ended up buying!

Shit - have you got a local cake porn shop where you can get some PROPER food colouring like Debs75 said, either sugarcraft or sugarflair?

No where to go to get nicer food colouring am out in the sticks - can't imagine anything is going to change the army green anyway...perhaps I can make it chocolate with some cocoa and put purple flowers on do you think?

What about the water icing grey - does it need more red or more blue? Would be happy with pale lilac at least, just not green or grey.

Thanks everyone for answering...

I would do the chocolate thing (if you have purple sugar flowers)

I'm not sure what you mean by water icing?

ksld · 08/09/2011 12:36

The water icing is just icing sugar and water and then the colouring (probably has a proper name I dont know...). It was grey, but I just added some raspberries and sieved it and is now PURPLE Yay!

On investigation my red colouring is fairly orange (cheap stuff clearly waste of money) so am guessing that is my problem. Now have a beautiful bowl of peach coloured icing to turn chocolate or add raspberries too...decisions decisions what colour do you get adding peach and purpley/red?
