I'm cooking a meal for 6 for my parents ruby wedding, and wanted to have a 1971 theme. I want to do three courses and dress like Margot Leadbetter. Any ideas?

I want to come. I'll dress as Barbara Good. Grin

Avocado and prawns
Cow au vin
Rum baba

Popbiscuit · 02/09/2011 22:29

Don't forget cheese and pineapple toothpicks and a hostess trolley.

pud1 · 02/09/2011 22:29

That's coq au vin, think a full cow would be to much for just six people

Grockle · 02/09/2011 22:30

Melon Balls/ Orange juice
Beef Stroganoff/ Chicken Kiev
Baked Alaska/ Crepes Suzette

Babycham to drink.

Can I come? I love Barbara and Margo

fivegomadindorset · 02/09/2011 22:31

Trifle

Grockle · 02/09/2011 22:32

Ooo, I looked in my old 1970s cookbook:

Eggs Mornay
Kidneys in Wine
Vols au Vents
Trout with Almonds (on the top to look like scales)

ChippyMinton · 02/09/2011 22:33

Fivegomad - I just watched that episode on the Yesterday channel. My parents had that purple floral bedlinen and matching curtains LOL.

The food was interesting:

canapes on Ritz crackers
chicken in reisling jelly Grin
green mashed potato
BF gateaux
baked alaska

And a 'wine cup' comprising white wine, blue curacao and soda water.

Ooh a hostess trolley. Envy

fivegomadindorset · 03/09/2011 08:48

WE have a hostess trolley. It is much loved and used daily.

You need something in jelly. Either boiled eggs in aspic, or some kind of elaborately layered fruit jelly with browning bananas and mandarins. Whatever is inside should look as if it's desperately trying to escape, but was overwhelmed by the oncoming tide of raspberry jelly.

Don't forget things like Dubonnet or Dry Martini as a drink beforehand. Also desserts like syllabub. Liqueur coffees to finish with - specially with Tia Maria, Drambuie etc
Matchmakers became very cool during the '70s, too, bit trendier than after eights, but not sure if they still exist - not in the uk.

Oh yes - avocado pear - specially in the avocado shaped glass dishes.

Omelettes became very cool due to Fanny Craddock, too. As did those uncooked chocolate + biscuit dried fruit 'tiffin' type things.

Matchmakers definitely still exist - I used some to make a butterfly bug cake for DD1s birthday this year. And ate the rest of the box :)
