how do i decorate cookies?

Please can some help,
I have never decorated cookies before and I would like to some decorating with my 2 yr old. I have sprinkles, etc but how do I get them to stick to the cookie? The only way I know would be to dip it in chocolate but I am hoping there is an easier method?

icing?
just water and icing sugar mixed to a thick paste. apply with spoon and then add sprinkles
